WTF Happened to Tropic Thunder?

Ben Stiller’s Tropic Thunder memorably satirized both the Hollywood war film and the often ridiculous lengths actors will go to in order to “capture” the characters they’re playing. While the notion that Robert Downey Jr’s Kirk Lazarus would dye his skin to play an African-American might be hard to swallow, it wasn’t entirely out there fourteen years ago. Hollywood’s self-seriousness was arguably at its zenith at this moment in time, and Stiller’s film brilliantly satirizes some of the more infamous performances of the era, such as Sean Penn in I Am Sam, Eddie Murphy in Norbit & The Klumps, and more. It’s also just a damn funny film (with Tom Cruise as you’ve truly never seen him before in a Harvey Weinstein/Scott Rudin satire that went over a lot of heads back then), as we dig into Tropic Thunder in this episode of WTF Happened to this Movie!

  1. Now I wanna hide (kind of an expert already), to these woke crybabies have gone away.
It is a reason it is called for a movie, and an awesome comedy.
Still not of the most hysterical comedies, but in so many ways, Tropic Thunder are one of the best.

  2. The criticism that the character of Les Grossman, a parody of Harvey Weinstein (who is Jewish), was anti-semetic in nature has really not aged well at all. Turns out Stiller and Cruise really hit the nail on the head with that one.

  3. Thank God this movie was made back then. It wouldn't have been nearly as funny with all the PC BS these days. I wanna see a movie like this mock today's virtue signaling woke Hollywood

  4. I like that the cast stands by the movie and what the video said “This is a parody so if you don’t get the joke, you never will” no point in arguing with people on this. They made up their minds and they won’t be changed.

  5. I think those who complain about it have "gone full retard" and you should never do that!

I think the bloopers on this movie are the best I have ever seen. Even when Robert Downey Jr. screws up his lines or ad libs a line, he stays in character and everyone just laughs.

  6. It IS one of the GO TO movie favorites that make me laugh.. just like "Down Periscope" with Kelsey Grammer.. those along with Stripes and Blazing Saddles will bring down the house EVERY SINGLE TIME… people being butt hurt about comedy is just silly… go watch some episodes of "In Living Color" from the GENIUS minds Keenen Ivory Wayans and Damon Wayans.. that is some of the funniest shit on this planet.. plus it gave us Jim Carry, David Alan Grier and a LOT of other actor/comedians. People who have issues with the past have issues with themselves and need to move on and try to create a better future without trying to delete the past… learn from the past and try to do better… you can't learn from the past if it's been sanitized.

  7. If you can track down a physical copy of this movie, he's right. RDJ stays in character through the whole commentary, and Jack Black shows up late and brings In-N-Out for everyone.

  8. Real comedy movies 🎬 act like they practically fly apart with satire and disaster Oh let's not forget the best one liners. This pretty much sums up Tropic Thunder where everyone is egotistical a clash of Hollywood on money train steroids to the point where they have no idea their in a life or death situations. I'm fact, they more afraid of staying in character than dying Which makes this even more uncontrollable comedy to the point you laughing at all the characters trying to stay into character. My head still spins at the end and how I got there 🙃 Bravo 👏 you actually pulled off real comedy 🤣
