Wreckage Of Titan Submersible Reveal How It Imploded



The US Coast Guard has just begun its public inquiry into the Titan Submersible accident, and in the process has released a number of documents, including, critically footage from a remotely operated vehicle showing the wreckages on the ocean floor.
I believe this wreckage confirms that the failure began at the interface between the carbon fiber pressure hull and the forward titanium interface ring. A great deal of composite debris has been pushed backwards into the rear hemisphere, while almost none is visible near the forward sphere.

I think your assessment is incorrect….. the failure likely happened at the rear dome rather than the forward dome….. as water started entering from the failure point it would push the air in the vessel away from the point that water is entering and increase the pressure away from the failure point, not at the failure point, the fact that the front dome blew off tells me the back end of the vessel started to crush first forcing the air forward and blowing the lid off, this also explains why most of the crushed vessel is found inside the back dome….. the point of failure would start to crush first and because the air inside the vessel is pushed forward there is a vacuum of sorts at the back of the vessel that would suck the wreckage backwards as the air pressure from the front would push the wreckage backwards and the front dome forwards, this is also why you see the tail basically unchanged because the force went forward not backwards….. if the failure started up front it would push the air backwards as the front filled with water and the pressure would blow the back end out destroying the tail cone….. it seems much more likely that the failure started near the back dome where the tail cone meets the body of the vessel and as the juncture of the back of the vessel body and the tail cone failed, it would collapse first and then continue to crush moving forward until the air pressure up front was so great that it blew the front dome off completely…… a failure point at the front dome would not show the wreckage we find, if the crush point was up front and then travelled backwards it wouldn’t crush the vessel and for e the wreckage into the back dome it would do exactly the opposite, the back dome would be blown out and you would find the wreckage collected in the front dome because the crush would move from front to back and as it moved backwards it would increase the pressure towards the back of the vessel until the pressure blew the back end apart…… it seems to me that you have this exactly backwards……

I get the fascination people have with the Titanic, but, I can’t understand why you’d pay to plunge to a depth of 12,000 feet to see it, when you can see its sister ship, the Britannic, at a depth of 400 feet. It’s not the same ship, I know, but, they’re virtually identical. You can get a sense for its size and all that, in better light, detail and safety. They were built by the same people, in the same ship yard, and both have fascinating history.

  3. I feel sorry for that poor young boy who was forced on the ride. His father knew the risks, the boy didn't want to go but his father forced him to anyway. Now he's dead because of his egoistical rich father. Horrible. May he rest in peace

I mean im not an expert on materials but i make my own arrows which are carbon along with have dealt with alot of fiberglass too and it's very obvious that carbon fibre crushes.. it crushes with a pipe cutter or if you use plyers on it and carbon fibre whould be on about the same level as chipboard/plywood to make a heavily pressurised container for me expecially considering that also the carbon fibre becomes cinciderably weaker when it has been heated and can not be restored to its original strength

  5. Sometimes the maximum stress is not where the failure is. Rather, the point where the material is weaker than the stress is what gives way.
    I'm sure there were higher pressures inside the Space Shuttle boosters in places other than the o-rings, but the o-rings were the place where the pressure was higher than they could withstand, what with their being cold and brittle.

  7. a carbon fiber pressure (in the)tank puts tension on the carbon fiber like hanging a weight on a cable or a tow cable between cars you can pull the car but not push the car with a cable if the pressure in on the outside the carbon fiber is no longer under tension it becomes like pushing a car with a rope the carbon fiber is no longr ading any streght it is completly up to the epoxy matrices

  8. When you've made millions/billions of dollars in a lifetime you start to think that you're so smart that you can do no wrong, that you've outsmarted all existing wisdom. No, you just won at capitalism and that's not actually a really high bar to clear. Then you go glue a submarine together and that's the last we have to deal with you.

  9. Seeing how they epoxied together the end pieces, I would never have gone near the thing. However, thinking about being in this contraption with all these other people, and even greater fear would be who may have had beans and sardines for breakfast!

  10. A pressurized carbon fiber sub glued together going down where the pressure is 6000lbs PSI what could possibly go wrong ?!! WTF they was crazy for ge,tting in that thing aint no way!! I wouldnt of felt safe going down 300 ft who ever design that thing dont EVER design and build anything again !! Crazy !!

  11. I have a contrarian opinion here: Stockton Rush is a hero that died after 14 successful dives on the Titanic. He forged new technology that successfully opened up access to the sea. He knew, and shared with his passengers, the risks of the environment he was in. People understood the risks and signed up for them. We don't vilify the many test pilots killed pushing the envelope. Would I have signed up for an Oceangate mission – knowing everything I know about the design and risks? Maybe. It's not a definite 'no', and I highly value my right to make those decisions. It might not be worth a 5% chance of fatality to you to get down there, but it absolutely would be to some. The whistleblower's behavior here strikes me as shifty and with questionable motives.

It looks like it failed at the point where the pressure vessel splits to let passengers in and out of the sub which would also be the weakest part of the pressure vessel because you will need an interface that is able to conform to a mating surface in order to create a water tight seal and that seal seems to be the point of failure.

  13. I used to read a lot about air disasters and the prevailing attitude in the aviation industry mirrors the apparent attitude at Oceangate. So many disasters occurred in aviation because people warning of an issue were ignored or overriden for reasons of ego, impatience, arrogance and often because of financial pressures. This is how the 'O' ring on the Space Shuttle ended up failing and killing everyone on board. The technicians said they'd be surprised if the shuttle got off the launch pad and the bosses overrode their concerns because they didn't want to delay due to cost concerns and pressure from above. It's like the scene in Jaws where Chief Brody is slapped by the mother of a boy killed by a shark that Brody knew about. But, it was the Mayor who ordered Brody to keep the beach open in order to keep tourist money flowing in.

    As we know it is a habit across the board in many industries to punish whistleblowers and cover up for those at the top. When you are having to repeatedly fire people because they are telling you that your product is too dangerous to use then you should think less about the financial and commercial setback and more about the consequences of ignoring critical matters. In the case of the Titan (what an historically poor choice of name for a sea-going vessel) they had numerous issues including low level failures with the carbon winding before the Titan made it's fatal dive. Because it kept coming back they just kept ignoring the issues. As many have said in aviation, nautical and race car industries it is that one last straw that will get you. Just one more run before you do a full health diagnostic could be one too many. For the Titan it turned out to be just so.

  14. A little bit of a theory..
    As soon as they drop the weights it seemed that the problem came full circle… If the weights were situated at the back of the vessel legs, that would be putting some pressure on the front of the vessel and as soon as they were released would have released that pressure.

    At the bottom of the vessel also makes more sense because it would shoot into the tailcone which would then fly off and keep going cleanly.. otherwise it might have exploded too.

    Also, you have to think about the fact that there was a point at which during their descent that even if they had gone back up… they would have imploded. There may have certainly been a point that if they had stayed at a certain depth they would have been fine.

    I'm pretty sure the biggest factor is not dissimilar to New England Winters..

    In this case pressure shearing. The carbon hull expands and contracts with the different pressures, sharing itself against the metal slowly, eventually wearing it down to the point of failure.

    The weights added increase stress to the front ring, might have been enough extra tension to accelerate or promote the process.. More like I said alternatively, relieved whatever pressure that the wait was imparting on the front ring when it was released.

  15. It's really difficult to grasp what happened to them. I mean, I know what happened, I read about it, watched videos explaining it, I understand it. At the same time, looking at what remained of that submarine, looking at where the 'bodies' would be and seeing nothing… Knowing that they were there, but absolutely nothing remained… it's just really difficult to grasp.

    It's very terrifying and brutal when you look at it as an observer. Good thing it happened too fast for them to know or feel anything.
    But you know it's just an awful, horrifying tragedy when the "best" thing you can say is that the deceased felt nothing.
