Worship Service: 1 Samuel 8 (August 21 2022)

Sermon texts: Deuteronomy 17:14-20; 1 Samuel 8:1-22
Sermon title: ““They Have Rejected [the Lord] from Being King”

Abstract: Samuel warned them that their king would eventually oppress them in many ways (1 Sam 8:1-22). Four centuries before, when the Israelites were still wandering in the wilderness on their way to the Promised Land, God told them the duties and responsibilities of kings who would rule over them (Deut 17:14-20).

When Jesus entered Jerusalem on the same week that he was crucified, people hailed him as King of Israel. They wanted him to lead them as their king in their war against the oppressive Roman empire. But Jesus’ kingdom is not of this world, but a spiritual kingdom. He became king not by leading an earthly army to victory; bot by amassing great riches through corruption; not by brainwashing people and manipulating politics. He became the King of heaven and earth by willingly offering himself as a sacrifice on the cross for the sins of his people. He is the King who has saved his people from the tyranny of sin, Satan and death.
