Worldbuilding Changes Discussion | Avatar The Last Airbender Netflix

I discuss worldbuilding in Book 1 (Season 1) and some of the things I think need to be considered when adapting this fantastic story into a live action version that the fans of the original will all enjoy.

  1. i notice people now are a lot more critical to movies and shows compared to back then i think it takes the fun and enjoyment out it all back then you watch a show and you like it or you don't just my observation

  2. I haven't heard much talk about ang and katara's romance. I feel like since the actor is going to be aging a lot more than ang did in the show it'll be doable but maybe not in the first season lol

  3. the world of avatar is based on asia in general not just east asia (and inuit) the fire nation has a lot of chinese and south east asian influence, actually more than japanese, aside from the whole colonizing stuff. meanwhile kiyoshi island, which is a japanese name, they are clearly more japanese influencesd especially with the kiyoshi warriors being styled similair to samurai with japanese theater make up, in the earth kingdom, yes ba sing se is a lot like what we in the west think of when we think " China" but its clear that aside from chinese influence there is also japanese and korean influences to be found.

and honestly we go even BEYOND asia and native artic cultures, such as native south american influences (especially in the sun warriors) honestly it seems that there has been inspiration pulled from everywhere BUT europe aside from the non brown eye colors haha.

especially ember island is very south east asia, i got so excited when i recognized those influences.

  4. Earth Kingdom is more Japanese. Fire Nation is Chinese. Water is as you said and Air is Tibetan. At least that’s how I saw it. The Kyoshi warriors are very much of Japanese look at least anyway.

  5. I find it hilarious that the water element is decribe as being one of change and get they are THE MOST traditional unchanged culture with no tech and sexist. How is that 'adaptive'?

  6. Love this analysis and speculation! I'm really looking forward to this adaptation after seeing the trailer and the producers' commentary for it. ❤️ It will be interesting to see how much any additional material (like more time with the fire nation) might supplement the original story. But I like your predictions, and agree with your hopes as well!

  7. I just want to say you are the most level-headed content creator discussing the netflix adaptation and I really appreciate you talking about why major changes will be necessary for this to be a success. Subscribed and can't wait to hear your thoughts on the show once it starts airing!
