World Cup Mistake Gets Player Killed | Last Moments

A mistake in the 1994 World Cup ended up getting a player killed, just a week later.

“Andrés Escobar Saldarriaga; 13 March 1967 – 2 July 1994) was a Colombian footballer who played as a defender. He played for Atlético Nacional, BSC Young Boys, and the Colombia national team. Nicknamed The Gentleman, he was known for his clean style of play and calmness on the pitch.
On 2 July 1994, Escobar was murdered in the aftermath of the 1994 FIFA World Cup, reportedly as retaliation for having scored an own goal which contributed to the team’s elimination from the tournament. His murder tarnished the image of the country internationally. Escobar himself had worked to promote a more positive image of Colombia, earning acclaim in the country.
Escobar is still held in high regard by Colombian fans, and is especially mourned and remembered by Atlético Nacional’s fans.”

  1. The description of the moment Andres Escobar was killed is not even close to reality. After his friends took him out of the nightclub, Escobar and his party went to another disco. Later, they were eating at a street food stand and when Escobar saw the guy that was yelling at him earlier, about the money he lost in bets, Escobar decided to talk to the guy. They interchanged some words, they both were becoming louder and louder, against his friends advise to leave, Escobar decided to approach the guy's car. When he was close, he was shot and died at the hospital. I got this from a person that I used to know, owner of one of these places, who was also leaving at that moment. I never had a reason to doubt his story and even less when he told me something that I promised I'll never repeat.

  2. As a Colombian AND a soccer player growing up yeah this is a story that I remember well when my parents told me. I saw the title and immediately knew what it was about. Also imagine how scared I was to ever play for Colombia in the future 😭

  3. I remember this story very well. I really wish people didn't take sports so seriously like this.
"People aren't like this in general involving sports."
While not always killings, I've seen a ton of physical fights over it, a lot of times with the televisions being destroyed if watched at a party or a home or something.
I don't get why sports get so many violent. It's just a game.

  4. Very unwise of him to go out that soon. Hate to say it but it was his fate. So sad. RIP Escobar .It was Shocking News in Australia.
South America is soccer crazy. Like Cricket in India and Pakistan. People commit suicide if their team loses .

  5. I watched it live and clearly remember all that happened after the OG. Some nations went to war killing each other, because of the football game between their 2 nations….If you visit Earth from another planet and witness such events, you go back and tell your comrades: "Forget about those creatures living on Earth; they're totally crazy".
