Wokou – translating roughly in “Japanese” or “Dwarf” pirates were raiders of the east Asia coasts during the 13th – 16th century. Among historians and history buffs compared them with the another pirate/raiding people, the Vikings. Regardless of their name, the Wokou were not only of Japanese nationality; eastern Asian Wokou were just as prominent. Besides the historical reference, this is a romanticization of their ship; leader’s area + seat inside the map device room, two tents concealing the raiders and the front area of the ship where crew members can be seen taking a rest and having a drink. I tried to decorate the rest of the harbour with east asian style buildings and a marketplace acting as a haven. Lastly the snow is just creative liberty. The melting snow and the coming of spring means the pirates can start raiding again, plus I think it’s a beautiful season.
