It was a very lucrative time to be a fortification engineer!
Norman soldiers tossed Saxons off Beachy Head in droves.๐ฎ
"Billy the Bastard" The North remembers !
๐บLoupis Canis .
04:08 Giving gold to the Danes, you say? Some kind of…danegeld? No way could this go wrong!
Many worry about a return to Feudalism as "we'll own nothing and like it". What happens when automation gets to a point when the rich don't need us anymore?
William would be my wife's side of the family. ๐
This period of British history is brutal, but also fascinating.
I am William SinClair, by blood. My dad was adopted into my current surname. Love my history!!!?
One of my uncles is English, and he married a Scottish lady. They have two boys, and every time they hear the name William, they instantly mutter "the bastard."
The long-term effects of the Harrying of the North showed up even 16 years later when the Domesday Book showed that about one third of Yorkshire remained wasteland and the population was estimated to be 150,000 fewer than before William's campaign.
I have a rough memory being told when I was in primary school how William the Conqueror came to Exeter, Devon. And because the city would not open it's gates to him, any that were outside of the gates when they closed he had captured and gouged there eyes to cause shock and fear to gain entry to the city
How true that is I do not know, but our history lessons on the subject never went further than 1066 Hastings
I really appreciate that you ended the video by acknowledging that, at it's time, this was all "simply an act of war". Too often do I see people around me judge the past by the standards of today.
William reportedly stated his regret over the 'harrowing', while on his deathbed. I suppose even he was sickened by his behavior.
I am following this and all the other channels now for a while and i rly enjoy the content, so please keep up the great work ๐ The only thing i would appreciate more is: More sources linked in the description or in the bottom of the cut ins and maybe less military content on megarojects
Alfred of Wessex: "If you pay the Danegeld, you will never be rid of the Dane."
William I: "Hold my mead."
i dont know how i feel about this, if i was a French Gaul Viking hybrid then OK, but what if i'm Saxon gene of old school, I'm not sure im happy about it at all. I want to side with the Saxons but if im a dirty French Norman this is very annoying.
Just maybe, the reason you have to host so many different channels is that your presentation style drives people off? Just something to consider.
And he created the concept of "crime" in England, replacing feud.
"making a mother of all omelets here Jack! Can't fret over every egg!"
I think the word you're looking for is subjugation, title writer.
I donโt know that utterly destroying the population and the economic base of a region is smart, nor is it just how waging war was done at the time.
William removed the dissent and threat, but the region was then a total loss for many decades. He removed the thorn in his side, but it did not have to be done that way, and the infamy of this campaign shows that this was not the norm.
He truly was a bastard.

PLEASE talk louder! The background noise is VERY distracting … not to mention annoying,
Does this sound like a current middle eastern war?
Have you heard of Edith the Fair. Her story might make an interesting video.
To be fair Simon, our modern interpretation of anything is softer than baby shit and borderline R*tarded
seems like a proper wanker. add him to the list with every other king of england except for Studderin' George.
Northerners, northerners!
not kool bill
Of course the limey excuses the crimes of the Normano British monarchy while he drinks his tea. evil British laughing ๐๐คฃ
I love the way you deliver your stories, but I have to have the subtitles on for the end of words/sentences when the inflection dips down to your lower decibels/volume… If I had the right jargon, I would have given the feedback a while ago. Reading some of the other comments gave me the idea.. Regardless, been a huge fan for a very long time.
William I upheld English Law as did everything in accordance with being a legitimate English king as that's what he wanted, he wasn't interested in being some sort of conqueror, he was the rightful King of England and captain of the English people continuing an unbroken line of English kings, in fact continuing after him Kings of England sometimes asserted they were ultimately elected going back to early England. It was a 'savage subjection' of rebels, not of England.
Please do a video on Hereward the Wake.
Thank you for publishing this. I am so tired of hearing certain educated people speak of the Norman conquests as if they were a civiliing, cultured influence. The better description was "Willy the bastard and his gang of psychopaths," as I heard it once described. These people showed their true colors during their influence in Jerusalem and the crusades later as well. Hardly a ivilizing or "cultured " influence, though their influence in history canยดt be disputed.
But they wouldn't have succeeded with the conquest without their dragons. Oh, wait, thats GRRM's version.
Any time I hear the word Hastings, in any context, my brain immediately respond "๐ถ0h 8 hundred, double 0, 1066๐ถ"
Itโs not even 10 minutes?? Did you forget to pay the basement gang??? ๐
Shortest Simon video ever lmao
โHell is full of kings and queens, while Heaven is full of the people they trampled.โ
Homo homini lupus is very true.
I only call crappy french colonizers "The bastard" not "The conqueror"
WIlliam the Conqueror was my ancestor ๐
My family lived in France, then "immigrated" to England in 1066. ๐ณ
The narration: ๐ค๐คซ๐
The background music: ๐๐๐๐ฅ๐ฅ
William I was the greatest King of England. All this is just Anglo Saxon propaganda at its highest. Slavery ended because of him, he made UK what it is today. He is family of Rollo the great Viking. Long live Normandy.
To my understanding, the English didn't like being conquered by a Frenchman.
This post is a goldmine full of fucking wannabe tough guys who have also fooled themselves with regards to clever or wise worded writing ability with these embarrassing attempts at euphemisms. This is the only one to remember: the only way to always be relevant in the real world no matter the setting is to stay dangerous, capable and intelligent with regard to situation/environment. Relevance in artificial platforms is achieved by also being fake and artificial but IRL you are just harmless and easy to forget as a non-issue. Eyes alive out there to all of these dehydrated keyboard pipehitters and UFC Champs, you utter dorks are hilarious just like this tier one cringe abortion of a video. Someone with a flea market katana set on their second hand dresser tented their fingers after spending a concerning amount of time in their room at their mom's apartment (but they tell everyone they have a condo with a roommate) bathed in the glow of $11 50ft LED sriplights used to illuminate the "Dojo" and said to themselves "this shit is that shit hot, dope, sickaas thermite grenade fire jank that is gonna burn the Internets down due to the earthquake caused by how hard it slaps ob them streets" with very much undeserved confidence and then check to see if they can still make Hooters happy hour
