200 years of tumultuous colonial history are contained within the pages of historian William Dalrymple’s four magisterial books The Anarchy, White Mughals, Return of a King, and The Last Mughal. Dalrymple will talk about the replacement of the Mughal Empire by the first global corporate power, the East India Company, a corporation that wielded more power than Google, Tesla, Facebook, ExxonMobil, and Microsoft combined, and which used its power to control both the economy and the politics of half the globe.

William Dalrymple :- is the bestselling author of the Wolfson Prize-winning White Mughals, The Last Mughal, which won the Duff Cooper Prize, and the Hemingway and Kapucinski Prize-winning Return of a King. His most recent book, The Anarchy, was shortlisted for the Duke of Wellington medal, the Tata Book of the Year, and the Historical Writers Association Award, was a finalist for the Cundill Prize for History, and won the 2020 Arthur Ross Medal from the US Council on Foreign Relations. Dalrymple has been awarded five honorary doctorates, is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, the Royal Asiatic Society, and the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and has held visiting lectureships at Princeton, Brown, and Oxford, where he is currently an Honorary Bodleian fellow. In 2018, he was presented with the prestigious President’s Medal by the British Academy and was named one of the world’s top 50 thinkers for 2020 by Prospect Magazine. He is a founder and co-director of the Jaipur Literature Festival.

Sanjoy K. Roy :- is an entrepreneur of the arts, is the managing director of Teamwork Arts, which produces over 33 highly acclaimed performing arts, visual arts, and literary festivals in 40 cities across the world, including the iconic annual Jaipur Literature Festival, international editions of JLF, and the launched-during-lockdown digital JLF “Brave New World” series. He is a founder trustee of Salaam Baalak Trust, providing support services for street and working children in Delhi. Roy works closely with various industry bodies and the government on policy issues in the cultural sector in India and has lectured and collaborated with leading international universities. He is the co-chair of the FICCI creative industries committee.
