Will this abandoned cement mixer make it 821 miles home?? My worst idea yet…

A customer of mine bought a cement mixer sight unseen in an auction near Las Vegas, and hired me to get it back to Central Oregon for them. As far as we knew if the history on this concrete truck, it was used by a Vegas concrete company for a short time before being parked out in the desert at the back of their yard and abandoned there for many years, until it was brought over to this auction to be sold. We don’t know why they quit using it, why it sat so long, or why it was sold. So I flew down there with nothing but a change of clothes, got the truck started, and drove it straight to the nearest @Harbor Freight to buy some tools and do a few repairs in their parking lot. From there it was a very @Vice Grip Garage type of road trip where I fixed what broke as I went down the road and just hoped I would make it home. Now it’s going to get some welding repairs done, and then will be taken to the shop to get a full mechanical checking over before going back to work

  1. For everyone saying to put the tool box in the cab… NO, don't ever do that! I've rolled a truck before and I can tell you that everything in the cab becomes a missile that's trying to destroy you. Do not keep any heavy unsecured items in the cab that you don't have to.

  2. Utterly love the enlaid or interspered pods on denting shell of old trucks . I have got dozens of studs affixed on my sleeping room roof . And guess what I used to encase sheaten my car hood with these salgons . I wish If I own money so I can buy a truck 🛻

  3. I’m surprised you didn’t just by a more ratchet straps at harbor freight when you where there and secure that axel way before you hit the road instead of waiting for it to start falling then secure it. Ohh well u got it tho👍

  4. It's really disconcerting that people are so irresponsibly using beautiful lands as dump sites. Having people like you, Jason and David risk your lives and your equipment to pick up trash is maddening. Thank you for what you guys do to make our environment a better place to live in and enjoy.

  5. Obviously you're kind of new to mechanics. When you were trying to disconnect that safety chain with the wrench you should have grabbed a long screwdriver for wrench to give you more force to be able to hold the shackle in place while you attempted to break it loose.

  6. I was wondering. Did you just drive the truck 821 miles on all the fluids that it had just sitting in the truck for all those years? No oil change ? Or any other fluid change?

  7. They take the batteries out of everything and put in those same 2 bad ones. Think about it? That’s an extra 240 on each sale that goes to the widow and orphans fund.

  8. Structural or CNC'd washers welded on your chute pins will stop the hangar splaying letting the chutes drop or at the least washers will make the chute become a bender for aligning the hangar plates.

  9. Mixer mechanic here. Had dialed down the booster axle pressure and shut off the pto you may have avoided pulling the pto shaft. I suspect that possibly you may have had a valve closed for the hydro. Anyway, next time remember we're out here for you when have questions about unknown equipment checks. Good job all in all though 💪

  10. You can turn off the pump next time, to stop the Hydraulic oil from leaking from the combo block. And the truck is a former Robertsons Remix truck in Vegas. They up grade the fleet.

  11. Just put your tool box inside right in the passenger side and use the orange strap for double safety with that cable
But this is 3 months ago and my advice is worthless ahehehehehe 😄
    Keep safe
