Listen – Earth is the only planet in the Solar System where humans can exist without living in a cave and having to carry a bottle of Oxygen at the same time.
We will eventually go to Mars, but a new home it won't be because
1. Radiation
2. No Oxygen
3. Smaller than Earth
4. Living in Caves

Think about your question. "could Mars be our next home?" I say, the costs, and the efforts to make Mars accessible to human comfort, (an important part of the human experience) are unbelievable. First, there is no magnetosphere. The radiation form the sun is not shielded for inhabitants. Neither is attacks from gamma bursts, and any yet undiscovered deadly stuff launched and racing through space. The planet needs heat. It needs to be in an area where liquid water can be on the surface and pool up. For centuries, Martian winds have been churning the surface coating up to such small items, that will permeate every refuge it finds. Even places on humans where the sun doesn't shine. The valleys we see through telescopes were not made by tectonic means. They were carved out electrically (similar to what an industrial carbon tipped rod does to metal welds) How does one plan to avoid that? Some crops could be grown hydroponically, but you'd need huge covered areas to control the temps, and organic consistency of the growth medium. Evidently the planets core has grown cold. The gravity on the planet clocks in as 1/6th that of Earth. Growing shrubs and trees requires carbon dioxide, and an abundance of water. Also they would need heat to continue to exist. I believe people can look at these issues and theorize certain methods of correcting these problems, but the scale of which would be astronomical. The Hebrew Bible has old prophets quoting God as saying "Behold I will create a new heaven and a new earth. " The pollution/trash/contamination problem solved by someone with experience. Just make sure to control plastics, and flourocarbons more carefully than in the past on earth.
