Will adding new ships to Elite Dangerous Odyssey save the game in 2024?
Back on December 14, 2014 Elite Dangerous went live. Consistently year after year up until December 11th 2018 Fdev pumped out new ships for the players to enjoy. This was all before my time because I actually had no idea that Elite Dangerous even existed.
I was really into No Man’s Sky back then but one fateful day youtube recommended an Obsidian Ant video about some insane space game that was dangerous but also seemed to quench my desire to find a more realistic space game. To bring me closer to my dream of being an astronaut.
Needless to say after watching his video on June 14th, 2019 I dropped 60 bucks on the Elite Dangerous Commander Deluxe Edition. I immediately jumped right into the game and within about 30 minutes I almost requested a refund through steam. Had I done that out of frustration I would have missed out on countless adventures that lead to many lasting friendships.
When I first started playing Elite Dangerous it was about 6 months after Fdev stopped releasing new ships on a regular basis. It could realistically happen at any time but for me I was just trying to learn how to play the game. There were already tons of ships for me to buy and try out and they all seemed to be suited for a purpose.
Not a single Commander who played back then could fully understand that no more new space ships would be added to Elite Dangerous until 2024. Days turned into weeks that accumulated into months then into years. This is a space game centered around ships. Well it was until the Odyssey expansion landed on May 19, 2021. The Odyssey expansion was an attempt to meld the on foot experience with the ship experience.
After Odyssey there was an update to Fleet Carriers that allowed Commanders to fully walk around the inside of their massive spaceship. The interior was carpmentalized in such a way that if you added the bay to your Fleet Carrier it would have that bay physicalized for you to walk around in and to interact with. At this point I feel most Commanders believed that ship interiors could someday become reality.
Don’t get me wrong ship interiors would be a godsend but what I would love most of all are a few new ships to play around with while inhaling metric tons of hopium hoping for ship interiors or on foot combat with the Thargoids themselves. However I would settle for new ships that are almost purpose built for certain tasks.
As a member of the Elite Partner program I am tossed a crumb of information from time to time. When I first received the email about four new purpose built ships coming to Elite Dangerous in 2024 I was extremely excited to say the least. Especially when it has to do with my favorite ship in the game. The Glorious Python MKII is going to be right up my alley I can assure you. I don’t care what its purpose is going to be. I’m going to fly the hell out of it the second I can get my hands on it.
In all my years of playing Elite Dangerous I never got to experience what it was like to have new space ships added to the game on a regular basis. Once I started making content it was obvious to me that everyone and their brothers, uncles, cousins, former roommates were either talking about or constantly playing Elite Dangerous as their chosen space game. The views were absolutely ridiculous during that time.
The thing is I lost touch with how I first fell in love with Elite Dangerous. It wasn’t the engineering grind, or making piles of space cash. It was simply flying a ship I loved just exploring space. Seeing what my ship and I could discover in the vastness of the milky way galaxy. That is where the magic of Elite Dangerous can be found.

elite dangerous 2014, no mans sky 2016 😉
i honestly think the lack of new ships is why Elite started to die off. Yes engineering needed updated to be less grindy (you ground to the max engineered module for this specific thing, great now you can buy it…instead of grinding all over again when you want another one), and space legs needed better implementation…but IF there had been ships to try out, i dont think those things would have mattered. I moved over to SC because of the new ships, and the ships dedicated to game loops, and thats without some of those game loops even being complete or ready yet, AND SC isn't optimized for my PC yet, but because there are NEW things to try, it doesnt matter.
my favorite adventures in Elite were always with my friends. but my top would probably be with my fully engineered corevette mining ship. i went with 4 friends into a painite asteroid mining field and we had a blast running into each other, all laser mining, chatting. then some pirates showed up and i (with no concern or sweat) turned my 2 size 4s and other non-mining weapons to bear and immediately blew up the 3 npc pirates. then right back to mining and having a blast with my friends.
I've been dreaming of a mining SLF for years. A smaller exploration-focused craft with a huge jump range and upgraded stock sensors would be very popular also. I like your idea of a combined air/ground mining loop. Anything that creates multi-player gameplay is very welcome!
Not necessarily but it is a start. I hope for good looking spaceships to add to my spaceship stable in my carrier
I don't think so
They need to get rid of "military only" slots. Keep the slots, just make them normal slots. They make zero sense.
I am in a gaming community that has over 170,000 members and everyone agrees if it was only an MMO how sweet it would be. But sadly, it is barely a multiplayer game. You will never have a long-term game that draws the masses that is not an MMO. I understand why it is not, MMO's take a very skilled team to create and a tech team as well. Where ED is very simple to create and add content to. It would be nice if someone bought the franchise and created an MMO version.
Last summer, I took my first trip outside of the Bubble. And funny enough, it wasn't to Colonia or Beagle Point. It was to the Heart and Soul Nebulae. On the way I got beautiful views of the Altera's Eye Black Hole and the Soul Nebula black hole.
Hopefully they add a few large ships, there’s way too many small and medium ship and only 4 large, not including the beluga because it’s a pointless ship
I’d prefer base building
I play in VR and this game is a glorious eye candy experience.
I like to take my Anaconda and mine with it. And when I get jumped by pirates on my way to sell, I melt face with my loadout. I use a hybrid mining/defense build with my Anaconda.
Or even the first time you fly the Anaconda through the mail slot. Glorious!
Are you back?? Or still in the rage baby category with doom of all ceremonies obsidian nat ??You guy's actually pi$$ me off tbh
no play sc
I hope the devs never listening to "influencers" like you
simply adding new ships would achieve nothing, there is a ship already for every role and ship interiors would become boring quite fast and people would demand a "jump to cockpit" mode
E:D needs some overhaul and a gripping story, sandbox is nice but the attention span of gamers these day can not be held with a sandbox with purpose of a sandbox, they need base building and stuff …
Iam still sleeping throughout the "GRIND" to improve.. so NO
E.D. needs more then new ships NOT just variations ships..
My favorite adventure? Just flying "out there" in my glorious Python (yes, my favorite ship) and putting my name on a planet somewhere thousands of LY away from Earth.
Question – Will adding new ships to Elite Dangerous Odyssey save the game?
Opinion – Not by itself no. There has to be changes including low hanging fruit & other wider scale balancing.
Opinion on Obsydian Ant – Great producer of Elite Dangerous stuff. I believe it was the original engineering update that made him cry for the awful laziness of the game mechanic. He wouldn't be the first.
Your first thirty minute experience – Refunding the game within the first hour or getting overwhelmed by the controls was pretty normal. I myself knew the mouse & keyboard wasn't going to cut it unlike the experience on the first Elite & then Frontier: Elite 2 so I went and got a HOTAS. It was nice.
New ships in 2024 – Possibly. Until ANYTHING changes to the game FDEV are just talking about it, which is an event all by itself due to the rarity.
On foot Odyssey experience – Odyssey and I paid for the early access like so many others and was underwhelmed by it. There was a lot of talk about it being not the release version which turned out to be well hopium at best. The bullet sponges the superhero levels of hearing and sight and the sheer grind of it all has put me off playing Odyssey. What it did to the planets was also a travesty of quality control. Yes farming at Jameson crash site is now super simple but there's no character to it.
New ships, Powerplay 2.0 & future changes.
On wider topics I don't need to play Elite Dangerous any more. I have thousands of hours in it while I was playing and I've seen and done most but not all Sag A for example it's an experience I don't need for myself. Now IF FDEV rebalances or redesigns the engineering of modules & weapons and has new ideas to present missions in a better more up to date way then I have no issue re-installing connecting the HOSAS & pedals and giving it a chance.
I won't be spending any money on it or their future products until they win back my trust so if at all it will be AFTER reviews and video streams.
I want to love & talk about Elite Dangerous positively. Currently the corporations are non-entities the missions offer awful payouts & are very poorly presented in terms of expectations & requirements, there's no side effect to having a corp hate you as you can move 50 ly away where no one knows your name and the planetary stuff of exo-biology is just plain stupid.
Maybe in 2025 I can say Elite Dangerous is a great experience but I'm not holding my breath based on past experience with the management of FDEV.
New ships are my number one thing. Hell yes! 🎉
Dat rear though
Elite dangerous was technically my first space game and I was fascinating with the concept of different ships for different purposes and I still are fascinating about that (playstation player BTW)
Who here plays on multiplayer PvE community Mobius besides me?
I had my fill on the multiplayer since Kickstarter. Now a days, i prefer to play with the PvE community.
Oh idk in my personal opinion more ships are always nice but i mean they aren't what makes or breaks the game and there is a lot of ships there already. I'd much rather see the devs rework and finish or fully realize all the half baked minimal viable product updates and features they pushed out. I mean there can be as many ships as we like but if the universe is still going to be only an inch deep and filled with arbitrary grind it just won't save the game. Or better yet i'd actually love to see the game move forward and start to compete again. There were times i even believed it will overtake Star Citizen, i expected space legs and all the gameplay it could bring. Oh but well then Odyssea happened and it seemed like devs wrote Elite off or were wroking on a sequel or something.
Recently bought Star Citizen and was a bit disappointed and ended up refunding after many, many issues. I think I will always come back to ED and I'm so glad Fronter are adding new ships, definitely gonna get back into this game and I look forward to more guides, don't think I would've sunk as much time as I did into this game without your help. One of my favourite memories is an expedition you did a couple years back on your discord, ended up on a player called GokuZwar's carrier exploring for a month before coming back. I just hope this can bring more people back to the game and restore at least (some) faith back into frontier. After all hopium is one hell of a drug.
Doing re-skins and calling them new ships is a joke. Give me real new ships
"Can new ships save ED" ? not without interiors. SC is attracting player every day as a result.
Good to see you drop an Elite Video again, Mr. Hawkes,,
Haven't been able to enjoy Elite for about a year now,, BUT,, Now,, I am intersted again,,
Bought this game in 2016,, played the hell out of it,, never was able to collect the Billions, like some do ,, I kept buying the ships,, and new ships that came out ,, and upgrades and upgrades,, ,, ,, the game was alwyas a nice escape from reality ,
If the game had seemless transitions and full ship interiors I would not have started playing star citizen
I was a straight addict to this game for years and then… Star Citizen and NMS caught my eye. Star Cit. Got really good really fast at the same time ED odyssey got all weird. But it WAS your tutorials that sucked me into Elite and I lived for the game for years after that. I do miss it. I might come back for new ships, but interiors are really what's required to bring it into SC territory IMHO.
They need to make the game actually "dangerous"
Everything is nerfed for whiners.
Player run economy.. ability to claim space and build stations. And un-nerf the yaw controls… Ridiculous immersion breaking super slow yaw… Comon man
New ships aren't going to save Elite Dangerous. Getting rid of the Thargoid fiasco will help a lot but sorting out Odyssey and making it something other than grinding suit engineering will probably get it to A&E in time.
No. More ships is just window dressing. Frontier has come back to Elite, one of it's oldest franchises, because they need capital. Suddenly a whole raft of new ships and features and oh my. Which is quite something (given 10 years of basically keeping ED on life support) – but none of this is 'the plan'. The plan was to make money off Elite, then invest in new franchises and keep Elite on maintenance till they hit it big. That didn't work out, so Frontier is back baby, to make Elite great again. Hell, maybe they will make good on the years of saying and not doing. I just will need a little more concrete example before drinking the kool-aid; we've been here before.
I have been with Elite from the begining, yep Kick Starter then the various Alpha phases. My favorite memory is the 1st time I cracked open an asteroid with explosives, nothing short of awesome, still love doing it. Bought a Fleet Carrier on my Void Opal earnings 🙂
Well I mean last I checked, they stopped supporting console so the game is trash now.
By itself, for us players, i think new ships actually do very little. Doing the very same things as before, in just another ship, means still doing the same things and will get old fast. The bigger value of new ships is to the outside, giving people as sign that the game is not dead and new stuff is implemented. And i guess for FD this is of crucial value at the moment.
My personal wishlist would rather be, more new things to do. A few new gameplay loops, more stuff to find out in the galaxy. Fixing a number of smaller bugs. (Random example: let ships in RES have different paintjobs again… they once, in a distant past, had that feature. ) And everything new being accessible in a reasonable way, without having grindwall after grindwall to pass to eventually experience it.
See: Thargoid content. Any new content also required some new piece of equipment, which you again had to grind for. So for most players, Thargoid content at each patch was best "played" by watching youtube videos of somebody doing the fights. Then you know what those 15 minutes of new content looked like, without having to invest days of grind to be able to experience it.
So, for the outside, to bring players back and perhaps even get a few new players into the game, new ships are a good idea. For everybody else, this effect by itself might mostly be of interest as it could bring in money and thus finance more development. But for actual gameplay, a focus on less grind and more fun is what we really need. Which might also happen with the powerplay rework and other things they merely hinted towards.
Time will tell. At least, after all this time, it looks like they finally decided to get things in order.
Personal sidenote: i very much hope that they include the galaxy and system map in there. The pre-Odyssey system was good. Somebody invested brainpower to make it useful, no matter if you used a mouse, a HOTAS or a console controller. What we have now functional, yet less efficient, when you use a mouse, very cumbersome if you try to use it on a HOTAS and from what i was told also very clumsy to use when on a controller. Makes me wonder, what it was designed for… probably touch screen, for when they will release ED on android? 😉
In the end, we still got to see how things turn out. Based on Frontiers history, i don't easily buy into what they told us now. EDs development is full of big announcements, small deliveries and broken promises. But at least they give the impression to finally, after years of not getting it, seem to understand that a game has to be fun to be successful and they should develop accordingly.
