Hey! I’m Banuune, and today we are diving into the mystery of why the Realm of Shadow was forgotten and never mentioned in the Lands Between!
We can clearly find information about the Lands Between in the Realm of Shadow.
So why was the Realm of Shadow never mentioned in any item of the Lands Between?

  1. Marika freaked Hewg out. He was freaking out thinking of how terrible she was to see as he used to work for her. I wonder if she was all glowy and ethereal like Miquella?

  2. I had this theory that Perhaps the land of shadow is hidden with the same as how Farum azula is lost and hidden from the lands between despite it being moments away from the lands.

This is just me getting crazy with my theories with no further research into the lore.
However I think the dragons that continuously surround Farum Azula are desperately trying to preserve the ruins but are stuck in a timeframe, continuously rotating around the ruins for eternity. And the reason for that is perhaps due to the rigid scene of sunset that is cast upon them.

The Sun present there is a sun drained of color and its effect is arguably present in the somber stones that are scattered anywhere in the lands between( and in the shadowlands too), as to why it was stuck in its place and what led to its state is still a mystery to me.
There is an item that talk about how the erdtree was as warm as the gentle sun, to me this suggests that the sun was dominant in the previous cycle of dominance. But was for some unknown events in the lore, was thrown away and its influence is only seen in farum azula( or really far away in the sky of the lands between idk what about that tbh)

Anyway i think marika had an idea about hiding stuff because she hid the rune of death in farum azula. Arguably what gave her the idea of veiling the land of shadow. She probably knew that maliketh can be hidden with the rune of death safely in Farum Azula. Of course Ranni later possessed a shard of this rune and stuff happened :), this also means Ranni and possibly miquella and Melina have some idea about the existence of the lands of shadow and explain how miquella was aware of the existence of the land of shadow. But i think I veered too far from what im talking about lol

Anyway Thats all i can say.
Also i enjoyed the video so far and i hope to see more from you 🙂

  3. I feel like people undersell the significance of the irises in Shadow, mainly because we mostly deduced by now that grace was present in the eyes of followers to the Erdtree, but on top of confirming this theory they also confirm that grace can be altered, it can be manually bestowed, and might just be artificial altogether. Was grace a product of the Erdtree? Or did Marika have to sit down one day and manufacture the first versions?

  4. Im getting lost about how much power does people in all the lands have…

  5. I think it's pretty much undeniable that the main reason Marika veiled the Realm of Shadow was to hide away the existence of the Sacred Tower, compounded by the fact that she orchestrated another veiling of the Tower itself.

You mentioned how a lot of lore in this game describes Golden Order dogma that suggests Marika has supreme authority as the one true God, but the existence, history and purpose of Enir Ilim debunk these beliefs rather emphatically. We realise how much more 'material' the conditions are to become a figure of Godly status, and how fickle Marika's shtick as "The Eternal" really is. It would make a lot of sense for Marika to erase all knowledge of a great tower housing a powerful God-making structure, given how 'aggressively monotheistic' the Golden Order was in the base game. On top of this, Marika – before Godwyn's death – seemed to be far keener about preserving her rule "eternally", so of course she would lock away a powerful artefact capable of making direct rivals to her Godhood behind multiple layers of veils and shadows.

On a more speculative note, some lore videos analysing the Gate of Divinity point out that three distinct layers of corpses make up its structure – and our Tarnished can only experience one of these layers without cheats, that is the newest layer, made up of Hornsent corpses presumably from the moment of Marika's ascension in the cinematic trailer – corpses that still bleed when attacked, suggesting recency. But there are two more layers beneath, that become more clearly visibly higher up in the structure. The second layer is made up of larger humanoids that bear no horns, and near the top, the deepest visible layer shows seemingly even larger corpses that have all become fossilised, suggesting a great disparity in time between the different layers. In my opinion, this is rather conclusive evidence to suggest the Gate of Divinity has seen multiple uses, even before the Hornsent, truly solidifying that there is no divine mysticism behind becoming a God, rather like almost all other things it is a matter of strength. Hence, Marika's status is by no means unique, and we have reason to believe at least two people achieved similar status in the past (because of the older layers), and Miquella achieves this status in the DLC without even having fresh corpses, meaning the realm has experienced 2-4 "Gods" at the very least.

In my opinion, all of this lends great credence to the idea that Marika veiled the Lands of Shadow in an attempt to erase all knowledge of the Gate of Divinity and prevent any rivals from harnessing its power, which I personally believe uses the power of the crucible to evolve/mutate a capable subject to the status of a God. Or perhaps we could be more daring and suggest that she wanted it to remain hidden to prevent anyone from repeating her mistakes. Who knows…

BTW, this was a lovely video. The amount of small Souls Loretubers I'm following now has become excessive.

  6. i don't really think we can conclude that radahn & rennala had been made to forget their loved ones from the fact theyre not discussed in the basegame alone, given that both had entirely lost their minds by the time we encounter them in the basegame. like assuming rennala DID fully remember rellana still i dont think she would bring that up unprompted to a random tarnished who wandered in? i mean she never once mentions radagon to us either but it definitely seems like she is haunted by his memory regardless. dunno i mean i guess its not impossible that rennalas current state is the result of being mindwiped to forget rellana & radagon rather than heartbreak over their loss but i feel like that cheapens her character a lot

  7. The way you put inflection on words annoys me. It sounds like you're reading off a script (which, ofcourse you are, and that's fine), but it also makes you stop at the end of side of the page, instead of at the period at the end of the sentence.

  8. Don't forget the Tonic of Forgetfulness, looking like the gold orange of the elden ring inside marika/radagon (explicitly in a brass vial). Every soldier was given a shield covered in Brass during the shattering, a shield with the depiction of a lamprey? (maybe? some kind of serpentine, weird looking thing) that looks a lot like all the figures in Farum Azula lining the architecture. It is in plain sight.

The only other thing to mention brass is the Inseparable sword which is interesting as that reflects Marika and Radagon.

Definitely stuff about forgetting that is very lore heavy. The Baldachins Blessing allows one to "forget pain and aches", which is relating to the veil over shadowland me thinks.

Some of the peopel that use the word forget the most are Ranni (like a lot) and the cute warrior jar even more so.

As we burn the Erdtree people start to forget (Hewg, etc.) We also have those hallucinogenic space mushroom theories, and that the Erdtree is some kind of illusory fungus thing on some other big tree. I think more than just forgetfulness, there is a mind control thing happening with grace, that veils certain things, and promotes memories/visions that Marika wants.

We also have Memory Slots (the mysterious black moon) thrown in the mix. As if there was something to remember about the past, a moon that crashed into the lands between, a moon worshipped by the Nox or Numen possibly. We also have that Amber Egg ripping apart memory, which is stated so many times in so many ways. This amber could be part of what removes peoples memory, the amber of the erdtree, the sap of the erdtree?

  9. Marika got bored of the shadowlands and so she trolled her kid into a classic genocide as she sealed it up. Funny story she absolutely meant to let everyone out but she completely forgot around the time she realized she had a girl crush on renalia (which she luckily solved by simply becoming a man inorder to not be gehhhh)

  10. This is a great video! There are some ideas here that I haven’t heard anywhere else.

From what I can tell, Marika set up everything in order to kill the Elden Beast. The Elden beast is the only entity we can interact with in the world that is high in hierarchy than Marika.

So the entire story seems to be about Marika taking power, but to what end?

I keep thinking about what Ranni and Miquella say about taking a voyage. A voyage to where? Is this a part of Marika’s plans?

  11. 8:30 I remember seeing a post somewhere which theorised that these statues are not actually representing Marika but the shamans or more specifically the grandmother. The statue which gives us the O mother gesture looks just like the grandmother statue in shaman village except its without the head. Maybe the hornsent decapitated the grandmother in front of Marika when she was young and as a reminder of their sins she had her followers build these statues headless when they were sent to purge the hornsent. I think this theory is likely as we don't really see any npc speak ill of her (besides hornsents but they dont count), we don't see any remains of the heads and there is a stake of Marika right before the fire knight guarding Messmer which is in a perfect conditions (there are models of the stakes which are completely destroyed so they would have put that here but they did not so ig that's a hint). This makes logical sense too as why would they only destroy the head and not anything else? It just seems so odd to me.

  12. 21:37 "become elden lord by her side" BIG problem with that, the frenzied flame. If we inherit the frenzied flame we literally destroy her by becoming the lord of frenzied flame. Naturally she should stop guiding us when we inherit it right? But she doesn't! whatever her goal is ruling for eternity is the last thing it could be. I believe her goal is simply to die. In every playthrough we slay Radagon and Elden Beast and in every ending Marika does kind of die in a way (ends up as a husk, sent to who knows where by Ranni and destroyed by the frenzied flame).

  13. 21:30 but grace never points towards her children on the map except for Morgott and Miquella (not counting carian demigods and godrick as the former are not her's and the latter is a distant relation who disrespects the golden lineage and engages in grafting). Now before you say 'The divine beast grace points towards Messmer' no it does not. If you actually follow its trajectory with a straight line it leads us to Scadutree Avatar, the boss that drops Miquella's great rune. No other site of grace points towards Messmer so its highly unlikely she wanted him dead. We only go kill him because Leda and Dane's letters say that its necessary. Want to know what happens when we do kill Messmer? Marika guides us again and points towards Miquella. Her youngest son got her eldest son killed and now he is going to imprison himself in godhood so lets kill two birds with one stone(revenge for Messmer and freeing Miquella). Nice dysfunctional family drama am I right? I do believe Messmer was sealed after the night of the black knives but this comment is getting too long so I wont elaborate. For Morgott's case he is literally guarding the erdtree so not much choice there but in Godfrey's cutscene the grace from his body does point towards us so that is in a certain way avenging his death I suppose (delulu territory ik but its something). It is also important to mention that Marika somehow got Vyke to reach the forge of the giants without killing any demigods. It appears to me that even though she wanted to die real bad, she still tried to spare her kids the best she could but ended up failing.
