Grass is my favorite, but we have birrs that grow and spread. Good clean straw third cutting no chemical spray. last wood chips in the walkway with cardboard.

I DD STUDY 7 YEARS AGRICULTURE AND I RECOMMEND YOU TO USE WOOD CHIPS INSTEAD MULCH., FOR MANY REASONS. MULCH CREATES A CARPET THAT DOESNT ALLOW THE PENETRATION OF WATER AND AIR, WOOD CHIPS ARE BIGGER PIECES AND THEY ARE FRESH. TRY 2 YARD SQUAREOF EACH ONE AND COMPARE.

Here in Akron and getting back into gardening during retirement.
My would in all sand and used chips and shredded paper, boxes, a and leaves that have bulked up the soil. The inked boxes and paper go around on one tap plants and they thrive just fine.

Jenna, I have tall grass in my area.
I cut all mine down and ran it through a wood chipper. It works great if you want a longer lasting mulch.
I do create “mulch volcanoes” around my trees. It doesn’t seem to harm them. I made the mistake of planting my trees by digging holes rather than building mounds which was a mistake in my wet climate. By creating big mounds of mulch around my trees I’m correcting that mistake. The trees begin to grow roots out the side of their trunks into the mulch mounds.
It's weird she hadn't mentioned compost – it's also kind of mulch – enhances soil, prevents weed (or partiality), thanks to high carbon content has also big water retention.
Sea weed can deter slugs
Cotton gin trash is some of the best you will find if you have access to it.
add biochar to your mulch for longer nutritional value

We got tons of rain last year which caused some people to get root rot .

Thank you thank you for all this great information! You are a gifted gardener/farmer and teacher. This is keeper and I’m subscribing. How long have you been farming? Did you have any formal education? Or trial and error? Or both?
I did notice when using straw this last year, that there were many 'sprouts' of seedlings popping up in my raised beds and in-ground beds. But, the nice thing is, I didn't have to struggle to pop them out- it was easier to remove them than my 'usual culprits' that show up. I am going to try to switch to alfalfa hay and see if there is any difference. Thank you for your informative videos and helping me grow more skills to make my raised and in-ground beds better and healthier!
I go for the free side of the mulch. Leaves are plentiful, I pick up straw after Halloween, and lawn clippings from my lawn (about 6-8 bags at least once a week), I only use from my property as I know what chemicals have been used. The straw is used in between rows.
Do you keep the same plants in the same spots year after year if they are doing well or do you rotate things to give the soil a nutrient break on what the plant zaps from that area?
