Best R.E.M. song? Impossible to come up with one. Everybody Hurts, Finest Worksong, Find The River, Man On The Moon, Let Me In, Be Mine, E-Bow the Letter, Talk About The Passion, Fall On Me, You Are The Everything, Near Wild Heaven, Half a World Away, Losing My Religion, Electrolite, Departure, Daysleeper, Walk Unafraid, At My Most Beautiful, Hollow Man, Mine Smell Like Honey, Uberlin. How do you narrow that lot down to one, and there are so many not even on that list that other bands would kill for?
R.E.M. is still my all-time favourite band. Put it this way, it's the only band I have a playlist in Amazon Music which lasts about 10 hours, and can listen to it the whole way through and love it. Can't seem to do that with any other band, as the passion would wear off after a few hours. They went a bit down hill from Around the Sun onwards though.

Fall on me and Man on the Moon
I first saw R.E.M. in 1981 at the Biltmore Hotel ballroom in Atlanta. They opened for Bow Wow Wow (of "I Want Candy" fame). I was there for R.E.M. but did stay for the main act. At the time, they only had the Hib-Tone single of "Radio Free Europe" out. The Murmur version always seemed too slow to me in comparison. Look up the Hib-Tone version if you want to hear the original.
I was 24, in a top 40 band, and hating it. My least favorite musical time frame. "The One I love" is melon-colic, whining torturous pablum to be endured in the set list. At some point I stop being 24 and get REM. I wish I was 24 again but with wisdom!
Try not to breath forever in my top favorite songsā¦. Not talking just REMā¦. Iāve just listened to Losing my religion in the 90s, I was 12 I think and I asked my dad for money to buy a disc from this ānewā band that I just heard. āMistakenlyā I bought the only REM record that was in the store (keep in mind this was a new band to me) , it was automatic for the people, the most perfect mistake of my life (Out of Time is so beautiful, not a competition; me in honey kills me every time)

I can Honestly say that I have never heard an REM song that i didn't like, and in fact,
I would almost always start it over as soon as it ended. They were not just "songs" they were an emotion all their own.
They made me feel something that I wanted to keep feeling, so I'd start them over.
All great selections. Hairshirt would have been on my list. Just a personal preference.
R.E.M do not have a single great song, so it 's impossible to have the greatest one.
REM will always be a treasure. I lost track of them after Monster, but they had a great run for many years.

I'm confused. If the key is Em and Michael Stipe sings a C note, isn't he singing a 6th interval, not a flat 6th interval, since it's a minor scale?
Who cares? REM sucks. It's the end of the world as we know it is their only song that's listenable
Good choice.. wouldn't be my choice.. but it's a great choice. My absolute favorite REM song is Leave.. it's such a melancholy anthem. I love the chords and the keys.. I can't believe the siren sound was played for the whole 7+ mins..

One song that rarely gets mentioned as one of those emotive REM songs is "Find The River". I think of it and "Nightswimming" as twins, but am emotionally affected by River, but not Nightswimming.

Superman turned me on to them… Fall on me in my opinion, is REM's greatest song. So many good (guitar based bands) song writers back then (Paul Westerberg, Black Francis). Love your emotion at 7:15. Music does that to me too. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

Green Grow the Rushes or I Believe. Country Feedback. No, Low. No, Rockville. Oh hell there are too many to count. REM was my favorite band. They were my youth.
I think 'Stand' is under rated. Mimicking the La Bamba/Twist & Shout riff as the vocal melody commanding the audience to stand still & think is hilarious. A bit like how the Byrds altered a motif from Coltrane's devotional 'A Love Supreme' to critique rock idolatry in 'So You Wanna Be A Rock 'n' Roll Star.'
As far as Iām aware they donāt have any.
I like Peter Buck's work with Tuatara. Saturday Night Church is a great song.
