Yes. For those of us with atypical neurology, it was a fairly obvious thing.
People aren't going to tunnel under their major cities right now. The regulatory environment alone is prohibitive.
So, why "waste" time and money on air-tight (a total tip-off) double-sealed tunnel R&D?

You aren't going to Mars and create a colony…
There's no resources there.. it's baron…
There are so many things wrong with this whole Mars colony thing, it's hard to decide where to begin. Let's just consider two things: gravity and generally cryogenic temperatures.
Mars gravity is far lower than earth's. This will make human habitation (if it somehow is possible) a PERMANENT situation. No person living long term on Mars, will be able to return to earth's heavier gravity. And (if reproduction is possible), no children born on Mars, could SURVIVE on earth.
As to tunneling, the planet is permafrost. Watch the series 'Gold Rush' and see what happens to heavy equipment when it meets permafrost ground cover. The metal blades BREAK. And for lava tubes to be useful, they need to lead to areas that can be sealed off, which requires drilling and digging.
In permafrost.
This is the dream of sci-fi fans and those ignorant to the realities of heavy industry. This is not inspiring or innovative…this is sad.

I don't understand the big push for colonizing Mars beyond a research station at this point in time. Why not try a massive underground habitat on earth first? So many parts of the world are not being utilized.
the only realistic way to get to Mars and beyond is for the whole of Mankind to get together, each nation doing their own thing is not going to work, we are just going to have to bury our differences to explore the stars

Mars will have good stock of Helium 3, useful in fusion reactions. Fission energy will help a lot. Tunnels with connectivity will be a good choice.

Great video. As you suggest the boring machines can be used for expansion of existing caves, and tunnels. So the boring machines can come later or a bit at a time. On a different tact. Musks other efforts also tie in nicely. Earthlink for communication, robots – workforce, AI for brainpower, management. Neuralink for human-machine efficiency, solar/batteries for power, tiny home tech for Mars space requirements, driverless conveyance- material distribution. Underground, eh? Why not do that on the moon? Closer, mineral rich, water in the ground. Why go all the way to mars?
This vision is far more realistic. Domed cities on the surface aren't possible due to the conditions on Mars.
Elon is reckless (1000 hp electric trucks and brain chips just two examples?)? Living on any planet without an atmosphere would be like working in an auto body shop sanding fiber glass naked? A planet covered in fiber glass dust you can not see several feet thick in places?
You want to make the history books safely mine the asteroid belt. Living on planetary bodies that can not recover from super volcano events instead of building star bases is insane? Or about controlling populations?
Would the tunnel boring machine need to be as heavy duty for use on Mars? I mean, would the lower gravity enable the TBM to be Aluminum rather than steel?

as it would make sense if you are serious about going to Mars that you would want to demonstrate that you can do it on the Moon,
as you are only a few days from help, we have lived on the moon for a few days in the past and could do it again.

I've watched a few videos about how bad of idea it is to try to colonize Mars. I think it's another opportunity for man to expand their knowledge by figuring out how to do it. Look at all we learned by going to the moon.
Fun Fact: Elon's Brother is developing ways to grow vegetables and other greens in vertical farms inside shipping containers who don't need direct sun light. Guess what the plan is for what Martians are going to eat.

Why Mars? The earth we are now living in is getting hotter and hotter, sooner or later, the earth will become Mars: so digging tunnels on Earth will soon become a necessity for humans to live in.
