Why Tanking Doesn't Work in the NFL

Some Minnesota Vikings fans want the team to tank for a better draft pick. Here’s why that hasn’t worked in recent NFL history.

  1. The first year the Vikings lose games on purpose is the last year I'm a Vikings fan. Maybe even a football fan. I don't want to watch ANY team, any sport, ever, where the competitors try to lose on purpose– this completely contradicts the only reason competition sports exist. ALWAYS try to win, as best you can, with what you have to work with. "Tanking" makes the whole thing pointless and cheap.

  2. If we didn't have Kirk we'd lose every game. That's an easy setup to tank. Problem is you cant tank with this GM. He literally botched his first four picks of his first draft and he wanted to trade back when Addison was on the board… he's clueless in evaluating talent.

That being said I don't want to tank but I would like to trade some players if we lose vs the Panthers and Bears and I want a true football mind as our GM.

  3. I consider myself a diehard with common sense. I want my team to play to win every game. Regardless of record. 1st pick is expensive and overrated. I wonder how many #1 picks are in the H.O.F.? 14 in the History of the NFL. 18 #1 picks have won a Superbowl.I say tanking is for quitters. I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t teach your children to “tank “ or give up at something. Just because there’s money or business involved it’s different? Stand by your morals and beliefs and apply that to all aspects of life. Either you believe in the Vikings, or you need to turn in your fan card. SKOL4LIFE!!

  4. Great video & excellent examples with the numbers to back it up! Tanking = backwards thinking. We can EASILY move up if needed with a mediocre record or even a great record. At the end of the day it's all a GAME anyway. Skol!

  5. I don't know if it will be possible to tank lower than the Bears who currently have 2 top five picks and aren't happy at QB. We play them twice. Seems like they can lose one or both and then we miss out on the #1 QB.

  6. Agree with you on a lot of stuff Andy, but not on this one. I think that tanking this year would be wonderful. We need to take our shot on one of the best signal callers available, fix the interior O line, fix our NT problem, keep swinging on the secondary, etc. Our results of trying to do a competitive rebuild have not yielded us our desired results. To add validity to your position: could our leadership actually play their cards right with the premium draft position, though?
