  1. The calculations made for the return on investment assumes access rates do not change (not even inflation is taken into account) or that ships get denied passage entirely.

  2. But the problem is, none of the actual ships could come through this cus the waterway to elbląg isn't deep enough and Elbląg doesnt have a good harbor to accept bigger ships. So right now, it is totally usless. Especially that noone wants to pay for making che canal deeper or modernising the Harbor…

  3. I mean, as a Polish, this video is misleading a lot to be honest, this canal does not help cargo shipment because there is no major port in the area, Elbląg that you mentioned is a really small one and its mostly recreational one, not cargo one. Lots of Polish people dont really like this project and feel like its pretty useless, its kinda even mem. Please do more research next time. I appreciate all the positive comments about Poland though, we do a lot of different things to be more self sufficient like Gas terminal and we now plan to build nuclear plants and major airport hub.

  4. The canal doesn't have to be deep enough to fit largest ships, because the Elbląg port is aiming at serving smaller transport companies, it's not a direct competitor to large ports.

  5. Is this an engineering channel, an environmental one? A political commentry channel? A social equity channel?
My point is this is an engineering channel and when you dabble in the other topics you need to be careful to say that its not your main focus, and should, in my opinion, provide links to media that focus on those topics.

  6. In the current state this new channel is too shallow and Elbląg's infrastructure is not ready. The previous government did it as a political project and left it half-done when it already bought them votes.

  7. Nice of you to explain canal locks to those unfamiliar with canals. The same system is used on small canals built to carry mule-towed barges in the US in the 19th century, like the C & O (Chesapeake and Ohio) Canal, where the locks still work.

  8. I love how explaining a simple, widely used thing as a "lock" (we call it a "sluis" in the Netherlands!) is needed. To the Dutch, it is just something nearly everyone knows.
You did a very good job of it!

The swinging bridges are also quite common here, especially in city centres. But for an out of the way project like this it feels like it would make more sense to go for a very high un-openable bridge (on mounds of earth on either side).
Since it's not a harbour area for loading and unloading ships, the space on either side isn't needed for anything else.
You could even make them slightly bigger, and have a nice park on the rises, with maybe a cafe on one of them. 🙂
I am sure ecologists can help ensure that that doesn't negatively impact the local environment, and I am sure that a bird sanctuary can be formed on the side that doesn't have a cafe.

  9. Not everyone in Poland is satisfied with the canal. The idea is good, but the canal is too shallow and too narrow for significant traffic; it was often called the "kayak channel". On top of that, the waterways leading up to Elbląg aren't really deep enough to accomodate even some of the ships that can pass through, and the deepening project was halted because of political disagreements.

Opinions vary, of course, but in general, the thought is that building a larger canal immediately would be better, but in the current state, it's a waste of money.

  10. Sorry but the russian part of the Frisches Haff is directly connected whit the Oostzee. so i don't think there is a height difference in water. There is probably a reason for the Canal Lock that there is a difference in salt/sweet water in the Frisches Haff as in the Oostzee.
