Why Rotten Tomatoes Is So Wrong About Legend (1985)

Master filmmaker Ridley Scott has had some huge hits with ‘Alien’ and ‘Blade Runner,’ but he’s also had some misses… ‘The Counselor’ anyone?

Today we are looking back at one of Scott’s misses with the 1985 dark fantasy ‘Legend’ starring Tim Curry, Mia Sara, and a pre-‘Top Gun’ Tom Cruise.

‘Legend’ is currently Rotten at 42% on the Tomatometer but it has developed a cult following over the years and has a 73% Audience Score.

TikToker and podcaster @/CinemaJoe joins Mark and Jacqueline to discuss whether or not Rotten Tomatoes is wrong about ‘Legend.’

  1. Tim Curry as 'Darkness' is one of my all time favorite movie villains, and after learning what he had to go through during production with his makeup and prosthetics it makes his performance all that more memorable and extraordinary. His final monologue questioning "What is light without dark…" right before Jack cuts off his hand and sends him through the veil of the abyss speaks to the duality of the natural world and the struggle between light and dark forces that rages within every human heart, and it really opened my eyes to the reality of the world that we live in. It was probably the defining moment in my life where I went from being a child to becoming an adult, but it also created a wonder within me for all things unknown and unexplained, which is the precursor to creativity and imagination and the most direct influence for all manners of art and science.

  2. Blade Runner, Alien, Legend,…I thought Ridley Scott had these all kinda miss at the theaters with critics (audiences?). The movies stood apart in their genre which was off putting to marketing and many people. Oddly, I liked and still like the Tangerine Dream version. Fantasy but different art from the rest. "Have you no sense of humor? Adios Amigos."

  3. I just want to say one thing; they screwed up The Hobbit. And at the same time, The Hobbit was supposed to be like "Legend."
Legend is every year revisit in my number 5 list even to this day. just love it. And I have said this many, many times and I will say it again: every frame of Legend is a piece of art!
