Why Promare looks AMAZING

Promare is by far one of my favourite anime films (along with Liz and the Blue Bird), so a video on this bombastically vivid film was bound to happen. In this video I did a lot of research into the how’s, why’s and when’s towards the artistic choices in this film, and how they involve their other projects together continuously.

Promare has its own unique aesthetic, and its downright gorgeous! This was a topic I’ve been wanting to discuss since the moment I left the cinema having watched it (and was totally blown away!) Thanks for waiting patiently on this video, appreciate you guys!!!

  1. It's so rare to find someone who can speak so succinctly and intelligently on a subject. Every single one of your videos so far that I have watched is just a pleasure to listen to because of the number of insights you've managed to find. Even films that I've already watched, and watched other reviews for you've managed to find so many other perspectives to look at and have clearly broadened my horizons. Thank you for making this channel.

  2. Incredible video, I've seen Promare more times that I can remember and I still didn't know some of the artistic details you talked about haha. Promare is definetly in my top 5 anime movies. I recommend Redline to anyone who liked Promare.

  3. Yet another excellent video! Looks like you've convinced me to finally cross off another title from my watchlist/readlist – last time it was Dungeon Meshi (such an excellent manga!), and now it's Promare. Shout-outs to Houseki no Kuni, Trigun Stampede, and Into the Spider-verse were like a cherry on top!

  6. Even though the writing's been criticized, I can't stress enough to people how they really let visuals took the reign here with Promare. You don't even need to know much of these creative processes to register they be COOKING with faiya. With experiences from the past, and even future projects like Cyberpunk: Edgerunners having some footprints in terms of coloring imo, Promare still manages to stand alone.

Congrats on making another video come true! I was wondering a few weeks back "hmm, didn't they had this video planned?" and was looking for it. Now I know what happened.

  7. I agree with all of your comments on the visuals of the series. But, I think its very obviously a lie that Studio Trigger intends to make shows with entertainment as there only value. Sure if you ignore symbolism and metaphor there is nearly nothing there. But this is a visual medium ignoring those aspects is rather odd.
You partially tapped into when you said that the triangle was the sign of rebellion and the Burnish. You can say this is a simple motif or with such obvios symbolism you can note that this is a queer love story with the pink triangles as the source of power for the burnish. The history of said symbol is also recognized by the story as the antagonist trap and torcher the burnish under that simbol.
Further extra narrative meaning and contemporary commentary can be seen in the use of fire people as the protagonist of our story and police as the antagonist. A clear reffrence to defunding the police. More over, modern symbolism holds the fire person as a symbol of anti-fascist movements– see Abigale Thorn's Philosophy Tube.
If by chance you think I'm pulling at straws you only need to note that the ultimate enemy of the burnish and the fire brigade is a fascist dictator that is literally proposing genocide. Just because a piece of media is meant to entertain with bombastic visuals and narratives that doesn't mean it is free of an ideological stance. In fact I'm afraid that when people look at a movie such as Transformers and see a bunch of explosions and silly fights they think the story is free of substance. Rather it is the opposite the story has ideology it just so happens that the stories ideology is hegemonic and therefore invisible.

  8. Promare is absolutely one of my favorite movies ever, and nothing compares to when I first saw it in theaters after getting a random ad for it on instagram. I got the steelbook cover dvd, saw it 4 times in theaters (and kept almost all my tickets) and I hope one day I can get the artbook. A lot of the things you said were elements I felt but could probs never put into words like you did ! (esp at 9:39, that along with the first half of the pizza place scene, just give me a overwhelming sense of joy and peace with its enviroment and color choice alone😭😭)

I don't need Promare to be anything more than just a bold, silly hype fest and that's why I love it so much. I hope one day it can come back to theaters cuz watching it on dvd doesn't feel the same lol. Thank you sooo much for this wonderful video !!

  9. Thank you for making a gorgeously edited vid on one of my favorite anime films of all time! I've always had trouble putting into words why I love Promare, especially because the story isn't what attracts me to it. But the attention to detail, the style and the characters are all what make it special. Thanks for a deeper look beyond the film. P.S. I also don't believe Galo looking exactly like Kamina was an accident either, Trigger knew what they were doing.

  10. This is probably the best analysis of the production and style of promare I've seen. I haven't really seen much formal analysis like this that really 'gets it'. Great video!

  11. Coincidence! I recently fell in love with Trigun Stampede and Studio Orange, and after watching it I kept thinking back to what I love most about Promare. From the colorful lineless visual style and western influences, insane action and perfect emotional yet still hype af music, down to the lovable mcs with undercuts. I love it when shows dare to be visually entertaining compared to many 2d shows we see today.
