Why is Vladimir Putin so obsessed with Ukraine?

Guardian correspondent Luke Harding chronicles the key historical events that led to the invasion of Ukraine, from the Euromaidan protests to the annexation of Crimea, and explains why Putin’s belief that Russians and Ukrainians are ‘one people’ is rooted in history from a thousand years ago.

  1. The reason for this war was never Russia .. and even if it was.

  2. Are there evidence that Yanukovich did all those alleged crimes? So easy to say.
All knew Russians are in Russia land. Different from the US that ousted the native Indians.

  3. Because its historically and legally Russian country,! Ask the question! Why is American owned/united nations so obsessed with Ukraine!?
Well if China now holds guardianship of the worlds trade routes think you might have your answer, Ukraine is the only ideal port to keep it bringing in taxes..

  4. what is this guy even talking about? Tell the west not to get involved in Ukraine and this war wouldn't be there in the first place. Watch John Mearsheimer video on this issue he warned this 7 years back accurately

  5. Kyiv was created first and there was Kyivan Rus, then centuries after that Moscow was created by a Kyivan ruler's son. Moscow and russia (they stole the word Rus and made it their own) is the product of Ukrainian rulers. But we do not say that russia is our territory and we do not try to reclaim the land that was in Kyivan Rus back then. we just want to have what we had as an independent state after the soviet union.

  6. I didn't see any process or efforts what such so called Jus Ad Bellum here, because everyone keep bussy calculating profit on OIL TRADING, no war no profit. Your head full with bussiness as usual, doesn't matter how much the casualties as the outcome.

  7. Russia wouldn't have touched Ukraine with a barge pole had the UK and the US not started the Ukrainian civil war and had NATO not forayed into the country and assisted the Ukrainian Azov forces in bombing women and children in the farming communities of Donetsk and Luhansk to smithereens. Putin, like Xi Jinping, is working for peace and prosperity in Europe and the world, and trying to stop the UK and the US starting military conflicts everywhere using the media as their weapons of mass deception to sell their weapons of mass destructions.

  8. In 1954 to commemorate the 300 anniversary of the unification of Ukraine with Russia 1654, Crimea (with its entire Russian population) was transferred to Ukraine. Sixty years later, in 2014 Crimea voted overwhelmingly to return to the motherland and become Russia once again. The Crimeans will fight to remain part of mother Russia. But they don’t need to, because most Ukrainians are pro Russia and are friendly with the Russian people in Crimea.

  9. USE YOUR BRAIN AND TRY TO THNK ABOUT WHY UKRAINE WAS INVADED IN THE FIRST PLACE !!!
    1- Thinking about joining NATO
which is NOT going to happen and i hope your little brain understands this
NATO and The Soviets (Russia) had an agreement not to expand westwards and we all know that this was broken years ago and now NATO uses ukraine to weaken russia which is going to work in the end however at the expense of Ukraine and the Ukrainians, this war will end up with Russia taking all of the important sections in ukraine AKA all of the sea access to the outside world plus the farm lands and resource rich areas and ukraine will be left in ruins as currently being seen with the black outs and the horrible things to come while NATO AKA America is gaining everything and winning everything on the expense of Ukraine and the mindless west
