Why is this island so dangerous?

Why is one side of this island poor, while the other is 10 times richer?

This is Hispaniola, a Caribbean island about 1,100 km from Florida, split into two countries:
• Haiti on the west
• Dominican Republic on the east

In Haiti, most people are Black, while in the Dominican Republic, many are mixed-race.

Haiti is extremely poor, with high crime rates.
In 2021, even the President was assassinated in his own home.
Meanwhile, life in the Dominican Republic is much more peaceful and prosperous.

So, why is Haiti so poor?

The main reason is history.

Haiti was a French colony that relied on slave labor. After gaining independence in 1804, it took decades for the world to recognize Haiti as a country. During this time, Haiti was forced to pay a huge debt to France, leaving the country broke. Today, problems like corruption and a lack of education make things worse.

On the other side, the Dominican Republic, colonized by Spain, focused on foreign investment, trade, and protecting its resources, which helped it grow.

  1. If Haiti had resources and wasn't occupied by the united states, they would be better. With money and no debt they surely would be better. The people are tired of this we want freedom we want a great country because of all these gangs and what happened in history, we are poor, we are corrupt, and we have a gang problem. All of this was made by colonialism. In conclusion I want to see Haiti in a better state.
