I have been in a relationship for 20 years. Its impossible to explain to people how things change after that amount of time because most people speaking on the issue now hasn't had a relationship for longer than 5 years. The idea that you can keep burning desire going for decades is a joke. If you try you will end up like Will Smith. An exhausted mess and she will still hate you. At the end of the day you can only control what you do. Only advise I can give is to never become compliant to everything she says. Always keep your own views and opinions no matter what she says and don't play into her drama and bullshit. Always call her out. That is your work.
In the old times and still nowadays in traditionalistic cultures, women were/are repressed. To get anywhere they have to THINK and be smart about things. In the US they think too much of their rights. It makes them STUPID. Both genders are capable of great folly, but women were the smarter, more centered gender. Not anymore.
Theres another influence on infidelity that I dont think gets discussed enough. The concept of monogamy that we currently use is the oldest philosophy in the world. Literally. Except for maybe money, there is no older societal structure that has been arould longer than the idea of monogamy and mating for life.
What never gets considered is that its very likely that we first started applying this concept in practice to how we mated before we even had a spoken language. Its possibly that old. When this idea of 'Til death do us part' was implemented as the norm in human mating practices, humans did not generally live longer than 35 years old. Even moving up though history nearing modern times its not until the very most recent of history that a human adult could expect to live much longer than 55-60.
Now, it seems to me that when your in your teens, which is when our desire for procreation and, as a consequence, relationships, the idea of one person for the next 20-30 years before I die doesnt seem unreasonable. Now fast forward that to today. Ill even spot the advantage of viewing this from your 20s instead of your teens. Even then, 'Til death do us part' can mean 70 years. Most people in their 20s cant even conceptualize how much time 70 years is! Thats three and a half times as long as theyve been alive and 25% of that timespan they cant even remember!!!
I havent done much research into the life expectancy of other species of animal which mate for life. Ive been meaning to but havent got around it. But I wouldnt be surprised if there were no species of animal observed on the planet which mate for life at an early point in their life but have a life expectancy of over 40 years. And if my belief is correct, then that means that our current application of monogamy with civilization is a process which defies nature and is 100% guaranteed to break down.
The problem with that theory is that it would seem that for awhile it did work. 4 generations ago, people were able to make a marriage work 70 years. Why it doesn't seem to anymore, to me, seems to be a consequence of how weve shifted our views on what the purpose of relationships is. Today, people think relationships are for fufilling their love story fantasies. Forever in love with 'The One'. But this also is a new development. 50 years ago, relationships were looked upon for their utility. A relationship wasnt about love. Not at all. It was a partnership. A unified effort between two people who were just able to stand each other just barely enough to not kill each other. Each member played to their individual strengths so that both of them could make it through life.
Why do you think arranged marriages were so popular across the world for millennia? Because marriage was not about love. It was a union which provided benefits for both parties. If you were lucky, youd be physically attracted to that person and maybe over time would grow to love them.
This also, I feel, even furthers the first arguement in that in current times, we are not applying the standard of monogamy under the same circumstances in which it was first adapted. Nor is it even being applied under the same circumstances in which we made it work for so long. So even if its not contrary to nature, its at a minimun, contrary to OUR nature.
We really need to restructure our laws (USA) involving separation of long term relationships. We also need to make DNA tests mandatory after all births on this country.
I truly believe that we should return to a way to hold a cheating spouse accountable for a marriage or LTR ending. If the cheating party doesn't receive anything during the legal separation, maybe it would curb some of this behavior for both men and women.
