Today, I’m basically committing millennial treason by making this movie reaction about why Hocus Pocus is actually a terrible movie. Lol, sorry, but it needs to be said! While Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy are iconic as the Sanderson Sisters, it’s all too clear why this movie was a box office flop back in 1993, before becoming a cult classic. Will the sequel, Hocus Pocus 2 be any better? We’ll find out! As always, don’t forget to like and subscribe! 1. Hocus Pocus was one of my favorite childhood movies. I would get so excited in September when Disney Channel played their Hallo-week line up teasers.
I think one of the reasons Hocus Pocus has become a classic is because it was shown so often on the Disney Channel during the Halloween season. A similar trend can be seen in the history of the 1946 film “It’s a Wonderful Life”. The film was box office flop, but when it entered the public domain in 1974 TV stations jumped on the free Christmas content. The movie was played non-stop during the season, so people started to associate the movie with the season and eventually it became a Christmas staple.

Hocus Pocus also serves as the first big movie role for Doug Jones as Billy Butcherson. Though he has 150 film/TV credits on IMBD he is best known for his non-human portrayals like Abe Sapien (Hellboy), the Silver Surfer (Fantastic 4), the Faun and Pale Man (Pan’s Labyrinth), or the Creature (The Shape of Water). He is "the most famous actor that you’ve never seen".

Bonus Fun Fact: the dress Allison is wearing at the Halloween ball was worn by Michelle Pfeiffer in Dangerous Liaisons (1988) which won an Academy Award for Best Costume design.

  2. I had no nostalgia attached to this movie so i couldn’t get through it but I do think its pretty good at creating atmosphere and a certain aesthetic that appeals to people

  3. I remember feeling confused by several plot points in this movie when I watched it as a child. All those feelings of confusion were put to the side by my IMMENSE sadness from the scene of the cat getting hit by a car 🥲 even as an adult that scene made me upset

  4. When I saw this in theater as a kid I thought it was so Cheesy and dumb. But now as an adult with little kids I can appreciate the cheese and camp of it. I have to excuse some parts that don't quite make sense by it being a 90s movie lol

  5. The song lyric that makes no sense that I constantly reference with my sister is from Ski Mask's song, Foot Fungus. The lyric is "She gotta go through him just to get to me, yes, I'm the middleman"
it makes no sense! he would be the middleman. he could literally say "I'm no middleman" or "he's the middleman" and yet,…….

  6. It was good to be a spooky lil kid in 1993. We had this, Nightmare Before Christmas, The Halloween Tree… it was a very spooky time. I loved this movie, and I always will, because it's off the rails and kind of terrible, but with a spooky autumn theme. That's a bunch of my favorite things all wrapped up in a neat little package starring Bette Midler.

This was the first movie that made me cry. I was so sad when Binx turned back into a ghost boy. I wanted to be Dani so bad, and live in a weird lighthouse room with my immortal talking cat. Then the talking cat wasn't immortal and I was UP. SET.

  7. The reason only Winifred turned to stone was because her feet touched the graveyard (hallowed ground that they can't set foot in) and that was what caused her to turn to stone. They all three explode because of their time running out. But her feet being on the ground of the graveyard was a blink and miss it moment, and they never explicitly say that the witches would turn to stone if they entered the graveyard, so I understand the confusion, as I was confused for years, too!

  8. Great video, but: about that exhumed-Miss Frizzell statue at the end, everyone knows Miss Frizzel was an iconic lesbian (played by iconic lesbian Lily Tomlinson). So her husband couldn't have killed her; she only had a very best gal pal that she lived with and did everything with. She died of natural causes. Just saying.

  10. when i was 5, i walked up to my mom and proudly said "I know what a virgin is." thinking i was gonna say something like "it's Jesus's mommy!" or something else, he asked me what it was. "it's a lady who hasn't had sex yet!" my mom panicked and asked who the hell told me that. i brought him my children's bible; it was listed in the glossary.

anyway thanks for the video! lol

  11. you can’t overthink this type of film. aside from the plot holes/inconsistencies, the more you try to read this movie, the better and more iconic it ends up looking 😂 you just can’t shit on this movie, no matter how hard you try. it’s just too good. (maybe that nasty candy corn melted your brain a little bit 🤢) but fr great video Nick, you always keep me laughing 💛

  12. also you forgot to mention when Max rescued Dani, he kicked the cauldron over and the potion had been completed at that point. so no it wasn’t fossilized, i guess the sisters eventually remembered all of the ingredients and finished the brew.

Nick I love you but it killed me to see you dismiss Penny Marshall (Laverne & Shirley, A League of Their Own) like that. And you named two of Gary's worst movies, but he deserved an Emmy for portraying the head of CBS on an episode of Louie.
