In a town just south of the arctic circle, rising levels of the world’s most hazardous chemicals like DDT, PCBs, dioxins and mercury have been found in the environment. But where did these chemicals come from and how did they get here? In a phenomenon scientists call the grasshopper effect, toxic pollutants released thousands of miles to the south evaporate in the warmer climate then ride the winds until they reach the cold air of the arctic where they eventually fall to the Earth.
