I’m a chap who has more gear than most – probably. Here’s the thing, a lot of folks say “tone is in the fingers” – but more than this – I think our fingers move the knobs to create tones….And generally we have (whether we know it or not) a preference and end goal that most likely we end up tweaking things to sound like….This is, I think, why whether I’m using Line 6 gear, real amps, or plugins, if I’m dialling in a lead tone, they all end up in a fairly narrow spectrum of tones that have certain characteristics that I need in order to play comfortably….And that’s why I sound the same…Probably?

  1. Your tone is not the same all the time, your style is consistent. Many people will get those two things confused. Tone is not in the fingers. If it were you would not need gear at all. People will tend to attempt to dial in the tone they like, as you said. Their is a guy here on YouTube, based out of Nashville, that has shown how nonsensical most of the guitar myths actually are. And he is correct. You just keep being you, guitars, puppies, etc and we will all be good.

  2. This experiment reminds me Ola Englund gear demos. This guy sets them where he likes them., as you do. You can still hear some differences between the amps, but in the end he sets them all to sound more or less the same, in the same ball park. In the end the important is you set them where you get a sound that you like and inspire you.

  3. Tone is indeed in the fingers….it's something we cannot get away from so learn to love it. Then we have to use the right gear to bring it out in the way we want it to be heard. I've been buying and selling guitars, amps etc since the mid seventies and this has become obvious to me over the years. Also get a bunch of players in a room with a guitar and amp and pass it around the room and let them play with no setting changes. The way the sound changes will amaze you…finger tone

  4. Basically those of us who have listened to and influenced by players like Holdsworth or EJ, getting a smooth, sustaining tone without a bunch of nasty frequencies is always going to be popping up in what we like.

  5. You're a great player but tone is not in your fingers and gear matters a lot. Otherwise, play through a 20 year-old POD direct into a DAW not using any external IR. Then use a Fractal or Kemper. Yes, you're still a good player but your tone will be a lot better with the newer gear. So I'm calling bull!@#$.

  6. Tone IS in the fingers, but not where you think. It's about what you choose to play when you respond to the sound that's happening. As an engineer, I hate the idea of recording a di on a laptop just for reamping. I always take a di, but it's for mix tweaks not reinventing the tone.

  7. I’ve tried and used soooooo many different amps, FX and guitars over the years. My singer always says doesn’t matter what I plug into it always sounds like me. But I do the same thing you do. If I use a boogie I dial it in a certain way. If I use a fender deluxe I dial it it to sound like my Mesa DC which takes a eq and stomp to get it there. My quad cortex and my dc captures or any other capture or model I use gets dialed in to sound smooth with fat mids.
That being said everything I plug into might sound similar when I’m done but they all feel quite different under the fingers.

  8. Great video, great topic. Your EJ specific tones are definitely an example of different tones you use. Some folks like single coil tones, some like HBs. Getting the same sounds no matter the gear is not a negative.

  9. The Helix Native sounded like what I expect you to sound like. The rest were clearly you playing but not your “signature” sound. There is a spittiness to the Litigator which isn’t there in the other plugins. To your point in the more recent video, I think this is more about your right hand technique and the amp is really making that stand out.

  10. If were Talking stricly about "sound", these sounds are kind of similar but not exactly of course.
but there are more things to consider,
bring in your personal phrasing, personal timing, own created backing tracks etc, and it will sound more and more like "you"
its very hard to escape that.

    btw, love your channel!!!
