Why do we know so little about the death penalty in China? | DW News

Use of the death penalty is soaring around the world. The number of people executed in 2022 spiked to its highest level in 5 years – that’s according to Amnesty International .The group’s annual report on the use of capital punishment found China continues to execute thousands of its citizens every year – though authorities don’t disclose official data. The second worst offender was Iran. Authorities there executed 576 people – up more than 80 percent on the previous year.

Saudi Arabia was third with 196 executions. A 200 percent rise. Amnesty also noted a significant increase in the number of death sentences carried out for drug-related crimes, a violation of international human rights law.

Despite that, Amnesty also praised some progress away from the death penalty. With six countries fully or partially abolishing capital punishment.

We take a closer look at those numbers with Chiara Sangiorgio. She’s Amnesty International’s Death Penalty Advisor and a co-author of that latest report.

  1. These sympathetic individuals do not care about the operating rules of human society at all. They only want to package themselves as morally noble individuals to satisfy their vanity or deceive donations. They abolished the death penalty, making drug traffickers and murderers more reckless, causing more people to lose their lives as a result. They hide in high-income countries and live a luxurious life, but accuse those who are malnourished of eating meat. They migrate highly polluting enterprises to developing countries and then accuse them of polluting the environment while importing products from them. They allow men who claim to be women to enter the women's restroom and participate in women's competitions, depriving other women of their rights and even exposing them to danger.
Don't let these foolish people control our country!

  3. Why must the victim (and all his/her family members) pay for the life expenses of the perpetrator/serial murderer/child rapist for several decades with their tax money? Why is it not the other way around?? Is this really justice? 😅

  5. Death penalty for preventing killing not promoting killing. If you kill somebody randomly and the consequences is only end in prison for several years, then it’s easy to commit murder crimes. For instance, mass shooting happens in the USA frequently,50 thousands people got killed in 2022 alone, much more than the total executions of the whole world.

  6. Our country is very safe
we don't need anyone to tell us what to do, okay
I can go out at 2 in the morning and do my shopping in my pajamas
My delivery can be left on the street and no one will steal it

  7. They forgot about the executions in China during the lockdowns where people died in their own homes from starvation and lack of medical care, or when they were dragged into large quarantine centers to die from the unsanitary and disease-prone conditions within.

  8. I find this shows EU experts' rigid mind and poor cognition ability. EU does not count the number of illegal immigrants drown in Mediterranean. EU does not count the number of Americans shot into "heaven" during U.S. Police actions.

  9. Rule by law instead of rule of law. The CCP see themselves as above the law and use it as a tool to carry out their nefarious deeds. There's a 99.9% conviction rate and corruption is rife. Says it all really.

  10. The death penalty is not a deterrent to committing crimes; it doesn’t stop killers from killing by making them think twice before acting. So, what’s the point?

  11. Actually in china we debated should we still have death penalty yrs ago, and the result is overwhelmly yes, so it's not a issue in china, just like can woman have abortion or can people carry guns, not a political issue here. Nobody will advocate abolish death penalty cus they will not get any support.
