Disney World really is a kingdom.

Have you ever wondered why Disney World is located where it is? Or how it came to be such a massive, self-contained universe? It’s a story that involves secret land deals, special districts, and, now, a corporation and a government locked in a feud.

The story of why Disney World is in Florida marries business and governmental concerns about the creation of the massive property. The engineering ranges from unique physical construction (like the creation of a lake) to unique legal construction (like the creation of a self-running government that could even build its own sewer system).

Buying Disney’s World (https://www.amazon.com/Buying-Disneys-World-Florida-Swampland/dp/1733642056) by Aaron H. Goldberg is an authoritative work about the purchase of Disney. Drawing from corporate records, internal histories, and more, it’s a comprehensive narrative about Disney World’s creation and early years.

There are a lot of great Disney fan websites out there that are obsessive in their Disney coverage. I found Jim Hill’s history of Reedy Creek to be a good intro to the topic. (https://jimhillmedia.com/history-reedy-creek-improvement-district-part-1/)

  1. Before deciding that year-round warm weather was a requirement, Disney considered two other East Coast locations: New Jersey’s Meadlowlands and a site near Washington DC.

    Thanks for watching!

  2. The Disney company has no plans to move Disney World now, but in a few decades when sea level rise threatens their business that is when they will start looking for a better location to relocate. Disney can beat DeSantis any day but they can’t as easily beat climate change

  3. Disney should have stayed in California, Disney World is the #1 destroyer of the Everglades it rapes the land and kills native endangered species like the manatee and Florida panther no one should go there if you want to go to a major theme park in Florida go to universal Orlando it's a better park anyway. Remember Disney's main hook is lying and saying it's "magical", but there is nothing magical about destroying the land.

  4. I've never been to Disney World and I will never go there. Why? It sounds tiresome.
And VERY expensive, which is my thinking. Given how middle class/working class
Americans have been impoverished by other sectors of the American business
establishment, who has the money to go to Disney parks? Or Las Vegas?
Or on a cruise? Most Americans struggling to pay off debt or loans don't have
the disposable income to go to places like that. Simply for leisure travel.

  5. Epcot was a bait and switch.
It was never really intended to be a real residential district, for the same reason Celebration was de-annexed.
This district does not act like others . The β€œresidents” were placed and controlled by Disney.
Disney is free of regulation and certain taxes while their low wage work force is supported by services (including schooling) through taxes in surrounding districts.
Was Desantis acting in retaliation? Of course.
Was he right that Disney had a sweetheart deal that gave them uneven advantage that should end? Absolutely

  6. So now the best transportation system, with the best safety record in the world, will be controlled by the absolute DUMBEST state government in the history of the United States.
( I would be afraid to ride it now.)
