Every few months, when the wind’s blowing in the right direction, a bottle of air is taken from Kennaook / Cape Grim, at the northern tip of Tasmania, and saved for science. Here’s how and why. ▪ More about the Cape Grim Air Archive: https://research.csiro.au/acc/capabilities/cape-grim-air-archive/
There was no way to put this in the main video, but I have to point to some of the bleak history of Kennaook / Cape Grim, and the massacre that happened there: https://www.ourtasmania.com.au/northwest/history-cape-grim-mass.html
CSIRO and I acknowledge the Pennemuker people, traditional owners of Kennaook / Cape Grim, and their continuing connection to their culture; and pay our respects to their Elders past and present.

I deliberately waited to get a haircut until after filming this.
The fresh air is what causes Tasmanians to date their cousins
Scientists. Gotta lov'em.
Finally, real science about air pollution. Note, I said air pollution and not climate change. Air quality is only part of what may be changing our climate. As for where I live, the Earth has been warming for over 13,000 years. The land where my house sits was under a glacier back then.
DONT LET PRESIDENT SKROOB KNOW ABOUT THIS PLACE!!!
I love how a story resulted in other older air being contributed and accepted
New challenge: how many interesting wind swept places can we get Tom to talk about infrastructure at
Yes, everyone, we also do science here in Australia.
Yes, scientists ride kangaroos to their labs or research centres.
I hope this means youre going to do a couple more videos in Australia!
President Dilma was right all this time
Melbourne is a city! The suburb was Aspendale.
Whi did he use PsI? Nobody from Australia in their right mind would use PsI
Hey Tom, I'm from Tasmania. Welcome! I have always heard that we have the cleanest air in the world but always thought that was hyperbole. It definitely is noticeably fresher when you get off the plane here from elsewhere, even the short hop from Melbourne. I guess that it must be true, very interesting I learned something new about my home. Thank you!
Dude just needs a surfboard on his right arm and he’s the archetype Aussie
If you are in Tasmania still then you would be experiencing some snow in the middle of summer right now haha
Ahh yes, the… Airchive
One of the highest per capita carbon emissions from a country and their top two exports are iron ore and coal and some of the cleanest air . What a paradox !
TIL we bottled our air
They really missed the opportunity to call it the airchive
I worked near cape grim for a few years as a dairy farmer, definitely very clean, if you spend half a year there without going near the closest city, you can feel how heavy the less clean air is, it feels soo thick and doesnt taste nice, would give more details but im not keen to out personal details
🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
And I thought someone else had a monopoly on "windswept and interesting".
YOU ARE TELLING ME THAT I WAS INT THE SAME PLAACE AS TOM AT THE SAME TIME I DIDNT KNOW IT?
its similar to ice cores that drill into old glaciers to see what the air was like back then due to it being trapped except those go back thousands of years
