Why are all these cars abandoned in the forest??

To answer some questions,

The reason there is so much trash, and so many vehicles in this area of the forest is because it is literally 5 minutes outside the core of a city of over 100k people. In most other urban areas, open public land like this is very far away, but here we are both blessed and cursed to have it so close. Put that type of public land that close to such a large population and youโ€™ll get the same result no matter what part of the country youโ€™re in.

All the vehicles that have vin numbers get their vin numbers ran, but itโ€™s incredibly rare to actually find a responsible party. These vehicles are all either stolen, fallen out of the DMV system, or were being lived in by homeless until they moved on and left the vehicle. Unfortunately in all of those cases thereโ€™s simply no one to go after and charge for the removal. These are not vehicles registered to an individual who decided they just donโ€™t want it anymore and dumped it in the woods.

All the vehicles will be scrapped, but the DMV lien process has to be completed to obtain titles on each vehicle before it can be scrapped. Unfortunately the scrap value will not cover the cost of the DMV paperwork and fees associated with getting rid of them, especially since there are so many RVโ€™s that are incredibly expensive to dispose of and hold no scrap value.

The trash at the sites I removed the vehicles from was cleaned up. There were well over a hundred people going around with dump trailers picking up the trash by hand. My job was simply to get as many vehicles out of the woods as I could.

This is not a forest service problem, or due to forest service mismanagement. The forest service is just the entity stuck with the results of the problem created by the society it borders up against. All we are doing is creating a bandaid on a wound that will never hear until it's fixed at the source. The worst part about this is that OUR public lands are getting destroyed and if kept up, eventually shut down because of a problem that the cities and counties outside of those public lands create and then cannot handle. The real slap in the face is that when those gates go up and lands get shut down, the people who caused it to happen will just keep on doing the same thing they are now, and the people who actually enjoy their public lands responsibly will be the ones shut out. It's time for a change.

  2. Sounds like you need a 6×6 or a raptor lined earthcruiser. Thanks for cleaning up the land. When ever the family is out we bring a grocery bag to pack out what we find.

  3. I picked up trash at a public recreation area for 7 years, I will never change until attitudes do, and that will never happen because there is not any meaningful punishment handed out when caught. You can not get people to return a shopping cart in a parking lot.

  4. I'm thinking that old Ford you think you don't want is perfect for you. Super cheap, a bit of welding and elbow grease and you have a recovery truck that you don't care about getting scratched, dented and abused for those deep recovery jobs.

  5. We are having problems in Western Oregon also. RVs and cars being abandoned and later burned in the forest. Just and example, I came across a big RV on the Umpqua National Forest above Cottage Grove that was abandoned in the fall and had been torched over the winter. It's happening all over the state. Bad news!
