Why Andor is going to SAVE Star Wars | Video Essay

Star Wars has been disappointing in recent years. The misfires of The Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi, as well as the controversial Sequel Trilogy haven’t exactly left Star Wars under Disney in a good way. Tony Gilroy and Andor have changed everything for Star Wars on Disney Plus with a mature and darker direction for the IP. In this video essay we take a deep dive into why Andor is going to save Star Wars.

  1. Ok, so as a guy in my mid 20s who grew up on star wars every project I watch now has 2 folds in my mind:
1 do I enjoy and understand it?
2 when I'm watching it again in 10 to 20 yrs with my kids or my sisters kids, in order of events, will they enjoy it?
I'm not hating andor myself, it's not bad, but it's dull.
When watching star wars in order, you're don't get introduced to many main charecters alone for the first time. Right now you start with EP1, soon that'll be tale of the jedi, but either way you're introduced to qui-gon, and he's there to introduce us to Obi-Wan & anikan, and on like that over and over. Even when a movie or show starts with new charecters, chewy, ashoka, saw, or Obi-Wan are just around the corner to tie us back to who we know. so our investments carry over into each project. Andor doesn't have anyone we've met already. Rogue 1 comes later, and saw is barely mentioned. Additionally action to keep attention is minimal, I find myself staring at my phone for long segments while the events play out. Which really bring me to my next problem when showing this to next generation fans: how old do I wait for them to be? Before I was thinking around 10-15 so they better understand the political context of the universe which really went over my 4yr old brain when I first saw some of it. Andor makes me think I should push it off to 15-18. This is a problem star wars has with its audience because of its non linear release schedule: how to grow with its old audience, but also still be an enjoyable linear narrative for new audience. Andor seams content to kill the 2nd goal. No one who can keep up and appreciate Andor properly is gonna go into rebels and not think it's too childish for them.
Just my thoughts, tell me if I'm wrong.

  2. 3 Episodes in and this story dragged. It's very Star Wars Solo. Cut out all long dragged out talk and get to the Empire. It took Episode 4 to barely pick up. Plus this was the 1st Star Wars with cuss words. No bueno.

  3. To everyone that was and is involved in Andor, well done!

It's been the only Star Wars apart from Rogue One that has felt like Star Wars. An argument can be made for The Mandalorian.

  4. They had a chance to save Star Wars with the Mandalorian, but then ruined it with Boba Fett and then This Obi Wan show. I enjoy Andor but I'm not going to bother watching any new starwars content unless I hear it's actually (really) good beforehand. Otherwise, I don't care.

  5. "Saving" is a very heavy term in this context, you can't thorw garbage at me for years to the point where I dont even bother to watch the trailers then release a couple non-dogshit episodes and expect me to get back on the bandwagon. They make a good couple episodes so they can get ppl talking to make up for all they money they lost, but we all know the show want last, and if does it will be turned into cash grab milked garbage, just look at mando, began really strong, they needed it to be due to the garbage movie losses, and just 2 seasons im it became a cash grab that does nothing but serve as a marlrting tool for other less interesting garbage spin offs. Idk about everyone else, ppl can waste their money if they like but I am completely uninterested.

  6. I agree with your essay. Andor is a different flavor of Star Wars and its damn good thus far. I hope and pray this series continues to uphold this standard in the future episodes. As far as I'm concerned Andor and Mando are the only 2 SW shows Disney needs to produce.

  8. Ur just fucking wrong about the book of Boba Fett. That show wasn't bad in my opinion. The fucking scooter gank was goddamn rediculus, fucking hated it but whatever. The show itself wasn't bad, We got more from the Mandalorian, and the excourse from Fett with the Sandpeople wasn't bad either.

  9. I think, like Blade Runner, the success of this show will be a slow burn much like the stories pacing. Given the platform, that's a very good thing. I'm really happy to see a story that's not a bubble gun woke casualty of a show and despite the good work of Faloni, escapes the child mentor cartoon all good Star Wars has become.

  10. Saving Star wars. As of now saving Star Wars comes from "a certain point of view." Otherwise its more of up not to our individual view of Star Wars. To some just a good Star War series could save Star Wars. Perhaps some like the Mandalorian and the direction of Obi-wan and well that saves Star Wars. Some look at bigger pictures such as what the sequels did to Star Wars and then look at the different series put out and judge from there. To each there own if you just want a series you like and enjoy and not care about the bigger picture more power to you. Enjoy I have no problem. From my perspective I go back to the beginning. I love the original series and several of the books that came out in what is called Legends. The Thrawn Trilogy to me is the direction I truly liked for Star Wars to go. So that is my Star Wars. I did not like all the books in Star Wars Expanded Legends but in general I liked that. The prequels I had issues but in the end I liked and accepted the backstory to the verse. I don't like anything the sequels did. I don't like the new cannon. Pretty much that killed Star Wars for me. I liked Rogue One. Mando was ok.. and the rest I did not bother. So my debate with Andor is this. I like the feel but its part of the new cannon. That Star Wars is dead for me. Would this work with what I loved about Star Wars. Remains to be seen. At the most this shows what Disney could have done with Star Wars but from my certain point of view Star Wars is dead for me so long as its in Disney's current form of Star Wars. The original trilogy and the Timothy Zhan Thrawn Series is always going to be Star Wars and what I loved about it.
