Which Is Worse: Marijuana or Alcohol? | Dr. Daniel Amen

One of the most common things people want to know is whether alcohol or marijuana is worse for your brain and overall health. The scientific evidence and the brain imaging work at Amen Clinics show that neither one is good for you. Alcohol is not a health food, and marijuana is not an innocuous substance. But is one of them more damaging than the other?

At first glance, it might seem that alcohol does the most damage to our brain health and general well-being because it is more widely used. Over 85% of American adults say they’ve consumed alcohol at some point in their lives, and nearly 70% say they’ve had a drink in the past year, as reported by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Compare that to just 18% of Americans who said they used marijuana in 2019, according to the CDC. Although not as widespread, the harmful effects of marijuana on the brain may be greater. Let’s take a closer look at some of the worst consequences of drinking and marijuana.

  1. I’m 73 and have never had either one, EVER. Control Yourself, Control your body, Control your future. I’m just a retired Civil servant who pays cash for every large or small purchase. Paid cash for my 4000 sf house. Don’t be controlled by substances or by people’s opinion. Those who can’t go without these crutches have serious inner conflict. Also, I never used the Fkn word.. EVER. (Sub human habit and disrespectful)

  2. 🤣🤣cracker calling yourself a doctor??!
It’s the only drug that stops my grandmall seizures!
I took other drugs after my head injury from my motorcycle accident and they absolutely did nothing!

  3. Sorry doc you’re actually wrong Mary Jane / cannabis has several benefits just like wine does. Cannabis in different forms has several different beneficial compounds. For people with seizures for whom medication doesn’t work there are particular types of CBD better than anything else to control seizures.

  4. Yoga is helping me quit my addiction to Pot. After 7 days of doing Asanas I became aware of the "high" from MJ amd I realized I could achieve that same high naturally just by opening my chakras. The experience is different for everyone

  5. You can ingest pot and it’s not bad for you, all my oncologists are on board with edibles and tinctures although smoking is not allowed. Alcohol is a literal poison.

  6. Marijuana 100%!!
Obviously the best option is neither but if given these two options, I’ll go with weed being the safest all the time. I have family that either has smoked since they were young, drank since young, did both since young, and ones that did it all. Ok so the ones that stuck with only weed they are living much better lifes than all the other ones. The ones who stayed drinking some developed alcoholism and a few stayed social drinkers but majority became alcoholics. By alcoholic I mean the serious kind, where you drink every day all day. The ones who did it all are of course doing extremely bad none actually stayed doing it socially or recreational wtv you wanna call it. Although some got clean not all did and the ones that got clean know that they can’t touch that 💩 or else it’ll get bad again. So unfortunately and fortunately I had my family (luckily those weren’t my parents or siblings) to teach me which drugs are bad. The ones who did only weed even if they started really young. Live normal lives and have descent jobs not one has said weed destroyed their lives. What they did say was that when they tried to stop they found it difficult but it wasn’t like they had to stop working to go get weed, steal to maintain a habit, or do anything crazy. If they had it nice if they didn’t it sucked but they could manage. The ones who did alcohol could not stop or else they’d have seizures and the ones that only drank recreational or socially never had the want to drink every day so they only did it whenever they wanted. So alcohol is almost case by case but one can’t know which one you’re going to be. So to summarize it if you’re going to do a drug to see what the big deal is do weed and don’t go past that. If you try alcohol and feel like you want to do that every day just stop while your ahead.

  7. I’ll take aging any time of the day over begging god to help me get rid of my addiction. Former alcoholic, heroin addict, and everything I could get my hands on!
Weed never did that to me so I’ll take aging any time of course not doing it at all is the better option but life ain’t that easy so if one is to fuck up. I’d rather they do it with weed than anything else including tobacco and alcohol

  8. One is bad for the lungs, and the other is bad for the liver. They are both bad, but if done in moderation, the bad effects for most people will be negligible. The problems really start to occur when people think they have to be high or drunk 24/7; this is foolish because health will deteriorate, tolerance goes up, and pleasure goes down.

  9. I quite smoking weed and it’s been 1 month, I thought my sadness, feeling of being a failure, no clue what to do with my life would get at least a little bit better after I quite but no. I’m still depressed, I’m still lost, and I still want to disappear. I still feel like a burden to everyone in my life, and everything in my life is crumbling down. I feel hopeless and like there’s nothing to look forward to anymore. At least when I smoked; THAT made me happy, gave me something to look forward to, now I’m just a loser who’s not stoned/ always sad or angry and there’s nothing to take my mind away from it. My car broke down the one thing I was really proud of (my suburu brz) and is now in need of a new engine that I can’t afford, my relationship with my bf is crumbing. My relationship with my family is not the best, and I live with my bf who I feel is miserable with me and would be better off without me but I have no where else to go. Where can I go? I don’t even have a car anymore. Everyone in my life would just be better off if I was never born. Life sucks.
