We simulate 1990’s Russian anti-ship strikes on five identical carrier groups. The groups are defended by; US FA-18 Super Hornet, US F35C, UK F-35B, Russian Mig-29KR and Chinese J-15. Which country’s modern fleet defender can defend their carrier group the best?

How about a challenge using identical aircraft that tests human engine and fuel management, weapon selection, flight plan and target prioritisation. Have a multi role mission with air and ground targets, plus Anti air defences to avoid. complete all missions in personal preference and flight path and still have enough fuel to get home. High and low targets, mountains, over water etc. See how the average Grim Reaper thinks. fastest and most efficient, wins.
I wonder if the the WISO is modeled in DCS, it might explain why the Hornets do so much better at deconfliction for the missiles.
I'm sure this has been said loads but can I just say that I appreciate your attention to detail and accuracy in your videos. From a scientist's perspective you're doing alot to explain the downfalls of your experiments which is important and often missed… Props🤙🤙
F18 has turbofan engines
Cap complimented the bog! This show just keeps evolving, love it!
Problem with Russian and Chinese fighters taking off from carriers can't carry full fuel and weapons loads.
any way you can tweak the F-14 into a representation of the proposed upgrade path (Tomcat-21 for the 90s and later ASF-14 for the 2010s) and see how they would fare in this?
some of the proposed upgrades were…
improved F110 engines: from the -400 to the -129 then -132, bringing the max thrust from 27k, to 30k, to 32k lbs per engine.
improved avionics and radar. first just further improvements and A2G modes to the APG-71, and later to be replaced by the APG-82 AESA.
integration for a Lantirn pod, AMRAAM, HARM, and AGM-84 Harpoon/Slam-er.
Y'all really hate the Hornet and it's sad. It's my favorite 4th gen. It's not the fastest jet in the world but it is a very capable all around multi role fighter. It's also unique looking and sounds awesome with the screech. I think it's the most underrated jet in the US arsenal. But of course it's becoming obsolete just like any other 4th gen
As good as the F/A18 is it’ll be interesting to see how the F/A XX does when it’s released.
According to Wikipedia, the F/A-18 has turbofans. But we all know that the Super Hornet is actually powered by a single 1.0-liter 3-cylinder Ford EcoBoost engine.
Just so you know Grim reapers, the AIM-260 is a hypersonic munition, meaning at least Mach 5 not Mach 4+
No tomcats?! I love tomcats. Throw tomcats at the problem……. Please.
The only other difference I would say is reaction time…. US carriers and aircraft have planes in the air all the time doing routine surveillance… And if they're 100 miles from the carrier and can detect aircraft at 300+ miles away, especially big bombers, then they would have a huge lead time in response vs Russia with less tech and slower response time
The new $15 billion F35 upgrade includes target deconfliction software and multi targeting shared between multiple aircraft.. AI real time super computer.. it will spread targets among multiple aircraft including the new unmanned wingman aircraft in development they are building to have at least 2 unmanned aircraft with each F35 that all run on 1 linked system shared through the F35
To bad the F22 wasn't carrier capable… 😅
We desperately need the J31 added.
In real life I would think if this was also the case, I would think it would be because the super hornet has two pilots, so the pilot could focus on flying and the combat systems officer would be able to deconflict the targets.
What makes the super bogs win all the time? C'mon cap, it's not the plane, it's the pilot!
I'm watching this and going, but what about that KH-22 over to the north east where the russians were!
Since you've given the Americans the aim-260, it miogh also be worth giving the Chinese the PL-21. The Chinese phoenix essentially. I know you guys like describing the PL-15 as that, but the PL-15 is just an bigger Amraam, using raw mass of fuel to get that extra range. The PL-21 is expected to be a whopping big 500kg, heavier even than the phoenix, and quite a bit longer too, and with a 160nm range. However, probably also the turning circle of an F-104, because those fins are tiny compared to the phoenix's
Video idea:
Get some retired pilots to plan an attack or better fly a mission so we can see the difference and we can get a proper read on the limitations on the game.
The F-14 D Super Tomcat.
In my heart it’s still in service.
Serving my DCS fantasies.
At best this is only mental masturbation.
In Real life, not all the hard points will have ordinances on the airframes. To maximise their optimum performances.
In Real life, there’s no AIs controlling the planes, as far as we know. So the only truly fair test, is to have human pilots in squadrons of each type of plane and test each plane sequentially, not simultaneously.
Please repeat this test properly, in the interests of True Science.
P.s. Why is there no way for pilots to communicate with their missiles, after they’ve been launched? Are there clever people working on such a system and if not why not?
Many thanks. Good video. 💛💛💪🏻💪🏻
No love for Rafale M?
Glad to hear Cap is doing better.
Super Hornet has 2 crew. The backseater can concentrate on the warfighting while the pilot can do pilot shit.
Good stuff here!
Would love to see a video on light attack aircraft operating for close air support under a mobile sam net. Like can a Super Tacano take out Russian tanks or supplies on the Ukrainian front lines?
I'm not sure why you would launch the F-35s in beast mode, all they need to do is get within range of the bombers, release their missiles, and then turn back; do it with internal weapons and the F-35B/C will be among the fastest. As far as range and fuel capacity, don't forget that the Mig-29K and J-15B cannot launch from a carrier fully loaded., they need to refuel midair to gain their fuel advantage.
19:44 lmao Mach 5 Cap!!
Only question I have is…why are the Migs even there? Is there a vessel worth defending that carries them?
For realism, should have Russian and Chinese early warning aircraft from those tests vs US bombers and missiles, also Russian or Chinese bombers and missiles vs US/UK fleets. Can Russian carriers clear the deck as quick as US super carriers or the Aunt Liz?
What about a smaller attack craft through the ages video. WW2 dive bombers, IL-2s, Skyraiders, Buccaneers, Intruders, A-10s, Su-25s, Broncos, Tornados, etc. I don't know what all is in DCS.
Is your 2020s lightning C variant taking into account the huge upgrade scheduled in the 2020s to update all their processing power, data link, and the works?
No Rafale :((
Defense Updates just did a video regarding the U.S. response to an invasion of Taiwan. In it they used escorted C-17s and C-130s to deploy the Rapid Dragon to sink a Chinese invasion fleet. I know you folks have done a couple of videos about Rapid dragon but these guys claim the US could put over 300 missiles (LARASMs) in the air from beyond fleet strike range and destroyed the Anphib assault ships along with most of the Chinese fleet. The fleet had 50 ships. What do you think. Would this work ?
Would have liked to see the Dassault Rafale, but beyond that nice Video
The Chinese make jets ?? Lol.. Chinese beer cans
PL-15 range is 160+ NM
Why no Rafale???
Defensively it probably is the F18.
Aggressively probably the F35 for the stealth, and out of the 2 there it would most likely be the UK variant purely because of the meteor missiles.
No Rafale?
Yee!
