What we do in the shadows is a 2014 New Zealand mockumentary: The story follows four vampire flatmates as they prepare themselves for the Unholy Masquerade, an event that happens every few years that is assembled for the undead.
We have four main characters:
Viago, the 18th century “dandy” vampire, as described by his flatmate.
Deacon, the “bad boy” of the group the youngest he’s under 200 years old.
Vlad the poker. Dark and mysterious.
And then we have Petyr, a reclusive 8,000-year-old vampire.
He strongly resembles the vampire from the 1922 horror movie, Nosfuratu.
I really appreciate the fact that these are different genres of vampires; some are similar to the characters in “Interview with the vampire”, while others, like Vlad, is similar to Count Dracula in Francis Ford Coppola’s “Dracula”.
There are a few other characters in this movie, which we may see briefly but they are still there, like banshees, zombies, and werewolves. We learn that werewolves are the arch nemesis of vampires.
We also have one man who has recently been turned into a vampire, so we follow the process along with him. I highly suggest you watch this movie if you love comedies, of course. If you love horror movies, as do i, this will also be enjoyable because you can compare it with other horror movies that you have seen.
There are a lot of witty jokes made throughout the film, Viago really tries to vampire, but sometimes he has difficulties. He’s a romantic at heart. His true love had immigrated to New Zealand many years ago. He decided that he would go with her after she left with her family. So, he asked his servant to ship him off to meet her. Well, apparently he used the wrong postage and it was 18 months before Viago go arrived in New zealand. By that time, she had found someone else and married him… Viago has yet to make that reconnection with her.
This is a very endearing and entertaining movie. There is a series out also called What we do in the shadows. I have not seen every episode (yet!), but the few episodes that I have seen, I am very pleased with. They seem to follow the same vein of humor as the movie.
Also some guest appearances by the original actors from the movie. What makes the series a little different is that we have a main character who is a female, who is hilarious and is a bit of a Change-Up for the show.
I have to suggest this movie, not just for Halloween, but for when you want to laugh and have a good time. Thank you for watching!
