Scores of people were killed when a passenger jet crash-landed at an airport in southwestern South Korea, with the aircraft careening down the runway on its belly before bursting into flames.
Just two of the 181 people on board the plane survived, after the deaths of 179 people were confirmed, according to the local fire department. The two crew members were pulled alive from the crash site.
It is the deadliest aviation disaster to hit South Korea since 1997, when a Korean Airlines Boeing 747 crashed in the Guam jungle, with the loss of 228 lives.
CNN’s Mike Valerio reports on the latest from South Korea and Richard Quest discusses what the videos of the jet may tells us about the disaster.

The gear were broken so the 737 crashed i guess
Richard Guest has no idea what he is talking about. Someone take his shovel away. He is just digging the hole deeper with every word he speaks.
A birdstrike does not always cause an engine failure. Jet engines eat birds every day.
Someone please report the first thing this crew did right. I will be waiting.
So horrible. I hate flying
Two questions
1, Why was the landing gear not deployed earlier ? – before the bird strike. ?
2, what was a ‘block wall ‘ doing at the end of the runway. ?
CNN 🤣🤣🤣
Aab
The wall made in Korea doomed it
Possibly a drone, not a bird, collided with the plane. If the drone hit the windshield, it would have produced shards that might have blinded the pilots, preventing them from correctly locating the landing gear controls, activating the flaps and thrust reversers, or managing evasive steering on the runway. Regulations against flying drones near or around airports still lack enough teeth. For the most part, a drone is not detectable on radar. To really implement no-fly zones for drones, it would probably require 24/7 drone spotters or manufacturers installing an aircraft-grade transponder on each unit.
There is quite a contrast between what happened in the US with Captain Sullenberger who lost both engines in a bird strike and was able to save his entire crew and passengers and what happened here.
Amazing that an airport would be placed between three bird nesting sites .Birds seem to taken more priority than human lives.
Placing a concrete barrier at the end of the runway was stupid and was the primary cause of all the deaths.
Most accident causes are multi factorial ,clearly that is what has happened here. From the bird strike to belly landing was only 3 minutes .
A detailed investigation needs to be undertaken as to who approved the airport in this location and who approved the concrete barrier at the end of the runway and built it.
Heads need to roll at the Korean department of transportation.
Very well done with explanation👍 My heart goes out to people who lost their love one✝️
Only thing they have to is! Put some kind of screen in frt of the engines! And who dumbass idea was it to put a damn brick wall at the end of the runway!! Smart😢
Thrust reverse was deployd on one engine?
My condolences to their families. I can’t imagine how all those families and friends feel
It looks like we may have enough data to determine exactly what happened. The flight data recorder and voice recorder will further prove how it went down.
A pack of wild geese/birds flew in its path. Enough to damage an engine. Engine powers the hydraulic landing gears. It also cause a malfunction to its controls where pilot cannot do anything about it. With last effort, they had to belly land.
Now they could’ve glided down safely across but there’s still a chance the rub and friction could’ve still cause an explosion all on its own. With or without the concrete barrier at the end of the runway.
It’s very, very unfortunate that a large concrete wall was at the end of the runway and it went straight into its path which resulted in the overall explosion of the plane. I don’t know what was in the other side of that wall, but if it continued to be just dirt, there’s a big possibility everyone could’ve survived the emergency landing as the plane would naturally crawl to a complete stop. Then flight crew would deploy the emergency chutes to slide down.
I am positive the pilots did all they can to land the plane. People have no idea, no idea how hard it is to control something like this so I hate it when people bad mouth the pilots. There are some extremely negative comments on here about that and those are people I will never ever associate with.
Eerie similarities to this crash and what happened on September 11
My deepest Condolences to the bereaved family
Rest in Eternal Peace
The pilots what about the pilots
You are still able to land this plane with only 1 engine running. How did the bird strike affect both engines?
I always wondered if nets made at end of runways made to reduce speed in case of emergency (where roads and homes are near) a viable tool.
Surprised Russia and Putin haven't been mentioned yet.
belly landing shd be directed to a water body nearby if there is one (there must be a sea near this, idk what part of s korea it is) yea s korea is a developed country but u know these safety standards kind of things are sometimes ignored or compromised – too much commercialisation.
Quest loves the sound of his own voice
Just wondering if they couldve instead landed in the water instead of the runway since it's in an island. RIP to all the crew and passengers
