Your facts right😉 My home town NARVIK 68° north , way above the artic circle , where the nazi's had their
first loss to the allied forces , is the biggest Norwegian iron ore exporting harbour .
    Best wishes

  3. I rode that ferry. Got a funny story about one of the vending machines on board. A bag of chips was stuck on the skittles screw, so I bought the skittles and only got the chips, that I wasn't interested in. Wish I could shows pics.
    Thanks Sal

  4. At long last, somebody who can read a map lays out one of the obvious motivations for Russia's invasion of Ukraine: sea lanes. As in, every war since Peter the Great's war with Sweden has been heavily influenced or primarily caused by Russia' inherent geographic limitations on her international trade by sea.

I had a seventh-grade history teacher in probably 1971 who pointed out that there is no clear way to interpret Russian history, and make any sense of it, without taking into account the vast dilemma posed by Russia's enormous size and enormous wealth in natural resources, and her being completely hogtied for centuries by a lack of warm-water anchorages for trade with the world.

Russia's Azov Sea priorities, whatever anyone might think of the way Russians have conducted the war itself, are so obvious as a permanent strategic motivation that I have a hard time understanding why no one in media ever seems to mention how huge a factor Russian access to the Black Sea really is for them.

Short of this, Russia has only the north Pacific coast, the Baltic, and of course the Arctic to ship goods in and out of the country, every one of which is severely compromised both by geopolitical considerations as well as by weather and geography. Now with Finland having joined NATO, the Black Sea egress to the Mediterranean is that much more crucial to the Russian economy, and their dealings with Turkiye that much more one-sided and not in Moscow's favor.

  5. My father was ordered to sea in September 1939. He was on his honeymoon!. His choice was back to his ship or enlist in the Royal Netherlands navy (MPs were at the door!). He did not see my mother again until 1944 when his ship was in Antwerp. He sailed in the Atlantic conveys, Russian convoys, support fleet for Anzio landings and evacuation of Dutch East Indies. Also was involved in the repatriation of Dutch POWs from Indonesia after Japan surrendered. He always down played his role as a seaman in WWII. He was my hero.

  6. 15:40 Yes of course they do. Russia's view on this region is that it historically is Russian clay since Catherine the Great. On top of this geostrategic issue comes the fact that due to the history of the region the Donbass and Crimea is settled with ethnic Russians who have been (violently!) discriminated against by post-Maidan Kiev governments under behest of US State Dept., namely Mrs. Nuland, who has a flaming hatred toward all things Russian. So the reasons for Russia to fight this war are threefold:
    1) secure the Black Sea Fleet base of Sevastopol for good and all
    2) "Bring home" the Donbass and establish buffer to outrange western (rocket)artillery
    3) secure Asow-Sea as an inland sea

  7. 24:45 OK, the Swedish ore goes by rail from Luleå to Narvik. Germany decided to conduct operation "Weserübung" in April 1940 because of intelligence gathered that England was on its heels to occupy Norway for their own strategic reasons, that is to cut off this vital ore supply from Germany. This was a race to the mission-objective (Narvik, Oslo) by both sides of the conflict, so much so that Germany quite literally arrived first by a single day!

  8. Sal This class of WSF vessels had a problem with commutator flash over since they were new. The solution was to slow them down (convenient to be at same time of Arab oil embargo of 1975. ) I do not know what was done about this excessive bar to bar voltage during the 2003 rebuilds as the WSF is pretty tight lipped when it come to these kinds of things that they consider too technical for public display! I would not be suprised that the speed limit was exceeded causing the problem.
