Ken is properly the mastermind throughout this whole story. He predicted everything Barbie went through. If he is the villain, Then he is a power-hungry mastermind who wants to take over the human world he and barbie entered and Will Ferrel was just a figurehead.
What I love about this movie is the hidden, subtle philosophical message about balance; the Barbie World and the Real World are essentially two sides of the same coin. And how both their matriarchal and patriarchal structures respectively are all human constructs – implied by Ruth Hadler’s convo she had with Barbie. Especially about how ideas live on beyond humans. It’s the absurdity of the human experience that both Barbie and Ken are experiencing for the first time. For a seemingly corporate film that’s supposed to push doll sales, it can get pretty deep.
I really loved this movie – it was one of the most stunning, yet meaningful films I’ve seen in a while. I think it should remain stand alone. I loved how it simultaneously jabbed at the commercialized and performative feminism that’s ever present today, recognized the beauty of the origin of barbie while also demonstrating what activism and change is all about – healing and reconciliation. The bits on watching someone discover humanity for the first time I felt were the most important. It highlighted such a wide scope of topics in a 2 hour pastel fashion. What more could you want?
No one cared about Ken at the end.Like in the real world,no one cares about men mental health😐
Saw it earlier today and loved it. A lot deeper than it was marketed to be. I was expecting fluff and fun. I got that but I also got a meaningful message through out the entire movie that generated a lot of conversation at the end between my friends and I. There was a moment in the end between Issa Rae and the Kens that reminded me of 9 to 5 that I loved. Gosling was 100% the standout but there were small moments where Will Ferrel demonstrated a restrained genius. The moment shows up in this video at 6:55. It's so small you could totally miss it but it makes so much sense in the wider context of the movie.
I feel like there's quite a few people commenting that they were surprised Barbie wasn't getting a job at the end of the movie. Like for her to have value or women to have value they have to prove themselves/contribute to society in a way that can be quantified. Thats the point, women are inherently valuable and she would run into the same problems Ken had trying to find a job that soon. Barbie clearly points out when she first enters the real world that neither her nor Ken have genitals. At the end of the movie, she wants to become a real person creating the ideas… thus the gyno appt. She chose to take care of herself first. Like Barbie always has.
I thought she was pregnant at the end. Now I have no idea
This movie is awful
Dudes playing Barbie, gosh this movie can’t get any worse
We watched the movie and left the cinema very disappointed. The first few parts of the movie were funny. Got bad from the middle (disrespectful comments about men, like all men are bad or stupid). Ended with a couple of good messages in the last few minutes of the movie, but few children can remember those messages later. If you are a man and have a little bit of self-respect, don't watch this movie. Those few good messages are not worth it. The movie badly fails at discussing equality.
I'm not here to have a conversation about the movie. Instead of replying, you may want to write a new comment.
Villain idea for a sequel— Lilly doll, Cindy, Maxie and Jem
Pathetic. No mention of the femninazi messaging in the movie or the false marketing .
I humbly disagree with Barbie becoming human in the end. I believe that they could’ve easily made her realize her part in Barbie history. She belongs in that world. Even though she didn’t feel like the original Barbie, stereotypes change over time.
Or they should’ve at least done the human switch better. Idk… I still think that she should’ve stayed in Barbie Land and had the realization that even stereotypical Barbie can change.
It's always so fun when people make a fun comedy without deep meaning and then both sides of the spectrum come rushing in and interpret the hell out of it.
woke trash film
The movie was way too serious and mature than initially expected, and sincerely, this is one of the best adaptation I've ever seen. No fan service depending (hello Mario) ; just top tier actors, top tier story, and top tier themes. Truly a masterpiece! 👏
I could taste the wealth privilege of the creators in this movie.
The ending means kens will still be second class citizens in a female dictatorship..
This movie was a spiteful and bitter pile of men-hating dogshit!
There's one quote that I can't find anywhere by Ruth. It went something along the lines of "…We make up things like the patriarchy to endure the pain of it all." Perhaps I heard it wrong, but I can't find that line anywhere. Mysterious.
i never cried at any movies and this had me cry twice
The entire theme of this movie is based on killing babies, that’s why her last stop is the gynecologist office (and why the girls smashed the baby dolls after they discovered barbie).
Wasnt free guy about ryan trying to save his fake world from an evil CEO and a muscle bound and brainless NPC bulit on killing Guy
Didnt Emmet learn he was just a lego minifugure after falling thru that portal making him relize how to be a master builder and save the day
So if everything they do is just kids playing (like Lego movie) then whos playing toxic Kens to have the ending
This was a very disappointing movie that exacerbates and encourages existing tensions between men and women, at a time when male-female relations are at a low point. I feel betrayed by the dishonesty of the feminist vision I was sold as a boy growing up. The movie doesn't culminate in a just society in which there's equal cooperation between the sexes. Instead the film proposes replacing patriarchy with an equally oppressive matriarchy. It was a revenge fantasy with the simple message "men are trash" and that a society in which men are relegated to a subordinate status is utopia. As a man, what I find so dispiriting is the audience reaction. It's now apparent that the new aspiration of 4th wave feminism is one in which women subjugate men. To make matters even worse, heterosexual relationships are presented as inherently oppressive to women and therefore unappealing and incompatible with female empowerment. I was sincerely saddened by this movie. If this is the new feminism, I no longer consider myself a feminist and if relations between the sexes are now a zero-sum contest, it's inevitable that men will regard women as rivals, not collaborators. This is coming from someone who published a law review article defending Roe v. Wade and the reproductive rights of women. A very regressive take on feminism that is apparently celebrated by the vast majority of women. Relations between young men and women have never been more acrimonious and this fans the flames. Historical injustice does not legitimate punishing men indiscriminately, especially young men who are largely supportive of female empowerment.
Idc what anyone says …Ben Shapiro loved thos movie 😂😂
There should be a sequel called ken and his brave journey realizing that as a man he has freedom to be what he wants. Shattering oppression and the blatant misandry his barbie perpetuates.
no one said that women need to be compared to barbie….except for women
Can feminists broadcast their message without falling into misandry? No evidence so far that it is possible, but we continue to search, and hope…
Someone needed to tell Barbie, “YOU -ARE-A TOY!!! A human play thing!”
Why is nobody talking about that scene with Ruth and Barbie it’s such a tearjerker!
Shit movie
you have to know that you have to have 13😢😊
Then you can go watch it😊
There's that made up word again Patriarchy
Feminist trash. 🤮🤮🤮🤮
this movie was as fun as it was thoughtful. all the talks at the end of random squeals with mashups of random toys…. no. Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach are both very thoughtful and intentional creators, they aren't going to make some piece of garbage Barbie/hotwheels/transformers movie. sometimes something is good, and you just have to let that be it, instead of murdering it by junk sequels for products and blockbuster $$$.
Ngl I cried hard
Tbh I thought the writers of this movie was the same as She-hulk
They didn't have any of the barbie mariposa or fairytopia in this shit
Also keine liebes Geschichte
…Schade….
Nur ein feministischer Film … und einer für erwachsene
Stepford Wives in Barbie Land?
Nope
Andrew tate and barbie are enemies
Rubbish movie
What dose the ending mean. Nothing, she just goes to the gynecologist.
Going to see Barbie in theaters was such an amazing experience. There were so many women of all ages all dressed up in pink and taking photos. It didn’t matter who you were that day we all got to be Barbie
I didn’t realize that the guy from Elf was in the Barbie movie 😱
