TL;DR Ripley, Newt, Hicks, and Bishop all made it back to civilization, where the 3 humans made a family. Also, there was some fanfic by people who hated "Aliens", but that doesn't count.

It wasn't a malfunction that ejected the cryo pods. It was by design and AI contingency plans. The Sulaco was passing by Fiorina on its way back to Earth when the cryo stasis breach and electrical fire in the chamber happened. The AI then transferred the cryotubes containing Hicks, Bishop, Newt and Ripley to an escape pod and launched it towards Fiorina, judging that they would receive medical support on planet.
What happens to survivors in Alien? Sometimes, bad writing.

I prefer Alien 3 by William Gibson. Read the comic and listened to the audiobook and the classic characters were done right and they survived. Besides, they deserved a better send off than what we got in the film we have.
