ROFLMAO. Brian you poor summer child. FOMO is BUILT in the culture of CONSUMERISM ITSELF.
FOMO is what built Fortnite.. Gonna be hard to tell companies to not use it to make money saddly
Yes, but it won't be.
It's too effective at creating an emotional response to drive engagement and sales.
But I'd love for it to be removed.
But, perhaps I'm being to pragmatic or even pessimistic?
I view FOMO as a tactic players have to recognize and rationalize away from. Play and support content you enjoy, don't play content you disagree with.
Needs to be cancelled instant un sub. Shows you support the hot garbage of cancel culture not freedom of expression. Why are you even gaming. Go be communist
Thought about not hitting like just to keep it at 69
The problem is that the games with the biggest communities are built on this concept. Unless people overall get fed up and start quitting en masse, it will never change.
Imagine if they released a monthly battle pass that 1-takes a month to finish, 2- It stays in the game, and 3- charge $20 per pass. It's a subscription that doesn't lock you out of the game if you chose to skip it. In the end, devs need to figure out a way to make players log in out of love instead of fear/addiction. FFXIV makes me log in because I want to and I think that's the reason for their success.
AMAZING Video Brian FOMO from the destiny 2 passes is why I quit that game and won't come back at least untill they get rid of it.
Agreed
Not everyone knows what FOMO is. Maybe you should mention what that is at the beginning of the video, then explain? You might have viewers leave early because they initially might not understand in the first few seconds. It's 'Fear of Missing Out.' 😭
I stopped playing WoW because since legion they've kept increasing the number of "fomo"-like mechanics where you have a limited amount of time to farm enough fiddelydoos to increase your schmancy power/level to have gear strong enough to beat fsmorgasblorp before the "season" ends and you miss out on some title or mount.
I also stopped playing Destiny 2 altogether because, despite having seasons, you could always go back and get the exotics and do the raids, etc. That is, until they introduced the "vault" to "trim out excess content", when in reality its yet another FOMO engine.
Now any game I play, I completely ignore any sort of time-gated content (FOMO engines like battle passes and seasonal rewards). Cue FFXIV where their entire premise is "never fear missing out, the game (and all it's features and rewards!) will be here for you when you decide to dip back in"
I don't like any battle pass.
I've yet to have it explained to me why I have to pay reccuring for a game (non MMO). Games that do that I instantly steer clear from for the most part because battle pass = lazy money grab
So you're telling me the items are in the game for me to earn like they use to be but NOW there is a time gate oh AND I have to pay extra if I want to unlock the actual stuff in the game that people want. No. I'm NOT going to reward these predatory systems like battle pass or loot boxes. If I have to buy the game in parts (aside from MMO) then YOU messed up and I'd rather deny you money then even consider being exploited like that. I pay $15 a month for FFXIV for almost a decade (2 if you wanna count XI) because the content for value is there, I get the whole game at my pace with no restrictions and I actually see where my sub goes (Bunny boy time :3)
Do not support ANY battle pass. As older gamers we have to the ones to set the example of NOT being exploited loot boxes are gambling and using fomo to force people to spend money is super predatory and its almost like bullying or psychological torture
i love the never expiring battle pass. no fear of missing out that way.
Heres some feeback on BP in games. I used to play Genshin Impact. I stopped playing all together because the BP took over how i played the game. I had to log on everyday to do chores. To compete a check list. Playing like this made me want to log off as soon as the BP was complete for the day.
Fortnite I have pladyed for the past 2 seasons and i enjoy it. I think its cause I do not play it for a week and have saved up exp. So when i log on im gaining BP levels at a fast rate. As soon as the super charged exp is gone I just wait for another week to go bye to play again. Both season I've reached BP 100 and it feels good. I dont get burnt out.
I do like the idea of exclusive items that not everyone will have. Scarcity gives value. There is a balance to be struck between FOMO and exclusivity.
Totally agree with everything you said! And side note, speaking of sides, what is the game that was running beside you in the video? 🤔
Still watching, so sorry if I'm repeating.. but with how they keep trying to cater to casuals (or however they put it) I can't see that they'll go super cringe daily you-miss-a-day-you-suck. If they really keep trying to adjust for people who don't have x amount of hours each night, they'll reflect that in their BP. If not, well, then they'll be saying one thing and doing another. I reeeeeally like the concept of a BP, but not if it requires me to log in every day and only have that day to complete 3 lame activities.
already gave forward a similar idea in the apex legends forum as I've always wanted to complete one of the older battlepasses I bought
Destiny at least lets you claim stuff from old battlepasses that you might have picked up as a small thing
one concern I have if battlepasses will be available long past a season is that it drives away hype from a season and gives players less reason of getting it as the content in it will anyway be availble forever.
Therefore I feel like making a battlepass availble for like two seasons could be a great option imo
i think it is a good implementation for a battle pass , it is one of the reasons i stopped playing cod for instance ,these companies just like to milk more money out of their player base in my opinion and something like this would probably make me consider games that have battle passes, but for rn for me i avoid anything that has more monetisation after the initial price of the game.
