In the recent starship program held in February 2022, Musk answered why he is building a mars colony. He said

Musk also explained why he is so ambitious about Mars, and according to him, the purpose of life is not just to solve the issues, but the real essence of life is to be inspired and move your heart. There should be excitement in your life every morning.
