  2. In needing to preserve his stature as the self labeled "Greatest Egyptologist" Hawass used the leverage of his position as Minister of Antiquities to thwart the efforts of other archeologists, many of whom had come upon possible significant discoveries, from the furtherance of any new and promising dig sites . In short, if something new were discovered, as soon as he got wind of it, he would immediately declare the area "off-limits" and post a 24-7 security detail to watch over the site, effectively limiting access to simply himself. God only knows what discoveries have been made, then seized, and eventually covered up by Hawass. In his defense, he knows that Egypt's modern identity is built upon 5000 years of viewable tangible history. He believes that identity to be fragile and potentially put at risk every time someone makes a new discovery. By limiting access to new sites to just himself, he, being first in, can filter or screen any and all artifacts or knowledge gained from the discovery, and then decide what can be made public and what to keep a lid on.
