Kees van Dongen, whose real name was Cornelis Theodor Maria van Dongen, was born on January 26, 1877, in Delfshaven, a suburb of Rotterdam. He became one of the most influential artists of the early twentieth century, joining the artistic avant-garde as one of the founders of Fauvism. His work, full of bright colors, expressive lines and strong emotions, marks a revolutionary approach to painting that rejects traditional canons for the sake of experimentation. Van Dongen became famous as a master of depicting beautiful women, who became the central figures in his paintings. Dongen gained a reputation for his sensual, sometimes flashy portraits, especially of women. He not only painted, but also illustrated books, created satirical drawings, conveying the pulsating energy of his time.
Kees van Dongen’s main contribution was his bold use of color and his depiction of contemporary subjects, from circus performers to beauties from high society. His works combined exoticism, eroticism and intellectual rebellion against outdated artistic norms. Thanks to this, his name has forever gone down in the history of world art.
A lot of interesting things await us ahead – Let’s go!
