What is freedom? | Joshua Shortridge | TEDxYouth@RGS

As our (student designated) resident philosopher, Joshua has spent much time in cogitation about the nature of human freedom, he will happily admit. Joshua recognises that he exemplifies freedom’s ideal obviously in the very nature of his opportunity to create a TED talk! However, he asks us to consider how much freedom we actually give ourselves in the face of how much freedom we actually may be allowed. He ponders: can one can lead their life in the trajectory they want to go, regardless? Who is really in charge? Joshua is in the Lower 6th Form at Reigate Grammar School. He feels passionately about freedom and believes that whilst no one has absolute autonomy, freedom reflects what we CAN be. Josh moved to the UK three years ago from South Africa and is very active in the RGS Christian Union. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

  1. I enjoyed this very much. Thank you. From my reading of the Torah and a mere glimpse of the retelling of the events described in the Summerian Tablets, humans and slavery are not strangers in the distant past. Not only the Hebrews were slaves of Egyptian rulers, but the whole of humanity. So we were formed in function of others to serve others. At some point the creator takes distance from the created (us). After losing our function and the relationship we had with our creator finding a purpose isn't easy. However, we must find one. The essential has been hidden to us and we must strive to define ourselves independently from our creator. But so many among us would go back to Egypt if given the chance. We are not slaves any more, let us fill the void of our master's absence with an appreciation of this emptiness that is our freedom. Give thanks for it and through our will comprehend the meaning of what freedom can be for us. Infinite possibilities we can project into the future, only one will give its fruits. Only in the presence of our master do we recognize and know ourselves.
