What If We Covered the Sahara With Solar Panels

What If We Covered the Sahara with Solar Panels? The Sahara Desert is renowned for being the biggest hot desert on Earth, yet it is likely far larger than you ever realize. Its size is very similar to that of China. North America, South America, and Southern Africa have some prominent hotspots, but none get as much as the Sahara Desert. It is spread across three time zones and ten different countries and obliterated by sunlight. More than 3,600 hours of sunlight fall on the majority of this area, roughly the size of China. And inside that substantial portion is another portion receiving more than 4,000 hours annually.
The Sahara Desert is located along the Tropic of Cancer, meaning that the sun is almost directly overhead for most of the year. And there are no clouds anywhere in the desert. Therefore, the sun’s uninterrupted illumination is ensured. For comparison, Germany receives almost four times as much sunlight each year. The Sahara is the ideal site on Earth to build solar farms and install solar panels. What would happen if we covered the entire desert in solar panels? What amount of energy might we generate? What impact would this have on the planet?
