Wizards and Warriors starts a new animated alternative history documentary series focusing on the Mongol Invasion of Europe and asking What if the Mongols invaded Europe. In our scenario, Ogedei Khan doesn’t die in 1241, which allows the Mongols to retain their unity and continue their incursions into Europe and Middle East. In 1245, the Mongols under the leadership of Batu Khan invade central Europe leading to the intense battles in medieval Bohemia. The defeat here didn’t stop the Mongols who were now full of wrath.     I really like this altenative history….I hope this would be come true before…..

    1 thing that I think was a mistake for batu is, he choose to destroy and sack rome….that was really a blunder….instead, he can kill pope and build a statue of khan and place it into the symbolic place….this will give a persona that mongol already 'subdue' the christendom and make the people in christendom submit to khan….

    After that, Batu can give a city to frederick or ezzalio for the reward…..this will give him more loyalty and of couse, more money and tribute….
    Italy is a rich area and can provide supplies for their subjugation of europe….and Rome is the heart of italy….

  14. Hmm. You are the military leader of the Christians. What do you do if the leader of the Mongols is in Italy with the vanguard of his army, but not his entire army?

    I'd trap him there by re-taking the passes through the Alps. Then use naval forces to blockade him – Venice should have a fleet available. After that, let him think that my fleets have left and he can escape by sea – and then wait until his fleet is at sea and sink it. Do a naval version of the 'feigned retreat', then close in for the kill.

    Mongols are great at land warfare in flat terrain, but not so much in mountains, and definitely not at sea.

    After that, round up the traitors and execute them in the Colosseum, in the same spot where the Pope died.

  15. After hearing about the destruction of Rome, it would be interesting to see what the British isles and Norway and Sweden will do. Will they be outraged and join the coalition or will they pull a Denethor and abandon hope.

  17. Interesting stuff, and honestly the events described are very much realistic. Sacking Rome is not super likely, but fits with the described events and is very much in character, as well as Ezzellino's and Federico II's Betrayal. For anyone wondering, yes, sacking Rome is an error, but not so crippling as you may think. After all, it's a couple enemies less to worry about for the Mongol host. The morale boost in the crusader host is certainly enormous, and they will find more recruits easily, but Europe is still fragmented and many peripheral christian countries don't give a toss about the fate of the pope. On the other hand, if the Mongols win, they will find keeping control of Europe basically impossible, and their empire would crumble much faster than in our Timeline due to overextension, which honestly is a pity – they would have conquered basically the whole known world.

  26. Well and interesting turn of events. Don't agree with the Italian campaign the way it went but it is what it is.

    Robert got himself impetuously killed as predicted although at least his death was of some value unlike in real history.

    You obviously felt the Second Lombard League incapable of defending the Brenner Pass against the Mongols even though they successfully held it against Frederick's German partisans as they tried to reinforce him in Italy. They defied Frederick's assaults, Parma actually sallied out and defeated his army ending any hope Frederick had of controlling Northern Italy. I don't really see these Italian city states bowing to the Mongols.

    I have to question the Mongols being able to get to Rome and besiege it without having to raid, rape and pillage much of northern and central Italy for supplies. Yes you have them cowing a number of city states but still it's a long windy road from the Northern Italian plain down to Rome to supply 20 000 men and horses. Italy is also a very mountainous country unsuitable for Mongol light horse tactics. Crossing the Po River and the Apennine mountains I would have expected to have slowed them more than nothing.

    Real Game of Thrones moment with Ezzelino de Ramano. Surely given he was a known supporter of Fredrerick II you would have though James might have been a bit more careful but I guess besieged cannot be choosers.

    Why did you choose not to have the Pope remain in the Castle of Saint Angelo? It's the best fortified place in all Rome back then. I don't understand your reasoning for him to go out into the main city. Also Innocent IV had fled to Lyon in 1243 along with the entire Papal Court and the Council of Cardinals and he didn't return to Rome until 1253. Rome's loss would have been shocking but not Earth shattering.

  29. I loo forward to see how the western church develops after the Sack of Rome. The institution of the papapy, with its claim of universal power, is fundamentally opposed to Mongol rule, thefore I doubt there would be a new Roman Pope, even a puppet one. I see a more decentralized church, as the Eastern ones, or the rise of an exile papapy, although legitimacy would be difficult to secure in such circumstances.

  34. The writing for this series is superbly entertaining. The breathing room allowed by alternate history has allowed for these awesome scenarios such as the colosseum being turned into a fortress, epic!.

    It's by far my favourite series yet due to the unpredictable nature. One note I love the battles so more anecdotes about weapons, freak occurrences or tactics would be awesome!

  38. If you are so bold, then why not make an alternate reality where the Byzantines advance towards Ruthenia, Russia, African Horn and Syria?
    Or a campaign of victorious German-Sicilian crusaders under Frederick II first and then a glorious Germanic-Italic empire under his sons?
    (I recommend Dante's Divine Comedy)
    Or a unified medieval Scandinavia?
