What Happens When We Die? Understanding Death and Consciousness

What happens when we die? What leaves our body at the moment of death? Is it consciousness? And if so, is it also consciousness that leaves a deer or a tree when it no longer has life?

A man talks about his belief that everything, including a chair or a body is made of energy vibrating at different levels. He has been in the room when someone dies and clearly seen the life leave them. He asks what leaves us when we die?

Rupert replies that consciousness doesn’t leave you. The idea that consciousness leaves you presumes that you exist as a physical body and that consciousness is located inside you.

He uses the metaphor of Mary and Jane to illustrate that when the bundle of thinking, perceiving and sensing that we are comes to an end and expands back into consciousness, the corresponding image of that activity dissolves.

Mary lives in Amsterdam, falls asleep at night and experiences herself as Jane who lives in Paris. When Jane dies on the streets of Paris, Mary’s mind doesn’t suddenly leave her. Mary’s mind remains exactly as it always is, but it ceases to localise itself in the form of Jane. So what appears to be the death of Jane is the unlocalising of Mary’s mind as Jane. Nothing happens to Mary – she doesn’t die, she doesn’t change.

This clip comes from one of Rupert’s In-Person Seven-Day Retreats at Garrison Institute, in October, 2021.

  1. a Halloween costume or cosplay costume with someone wearing it or it being on the hanger …
i remember before coming into this body i occupy and the process of it coming into the it, 100 % total recall , i also have had several NDE's and i am POSITIVE there is no such thing as death . even when we leave the costume is instantly starts becoming something else . The dead Sea is not dead it has microbial life we simply are unable to see with our eyes . We do not evolve we mutate or rather transmutate , what we call " life " is a never-ending alchemical process . The zodiac was never about religion or astrological prognostication , it is natures alchemical magic circle that tell us what stage of the alchemical process we are at as individuals and as a spieces as we advance through the ages and elements . It is my understanding we keep reincarnating over and over , it 's " secret " within the secret great work is to get off the wheel , to break the wheel to stop re-incarnating , to become the magnum opus the philosophers stone ourselves . the bible tells us we must be born again , born from above , i interpret that to me we are born in the flesh to get out of being recycled then be born of the crown chakra not the root chakra to open the 3rd eye god door and exit , this is why we have our crowns / corona chakras under assault by TPTB to keep us here in eternal service to the process .

  2. Body/mind is a localized phenomenon within the larger field. A drop of rainwater from the sky is a localized phenomenon of water falling on the earth or into the sea. The sea and earth themselves are localized phenomena of a larger universal field. The raindrop called Jane, though no more, is now the lake called George, or river called Nile, etc. The universal current flows to awaken, shape (birth), and release (death) through an infinite number of forms. As such, I am always and forever opening and closing my eyes; our human experience and transition from life to death, though often uncomfortable, is made more so because our primary education, rites of passage narratives, and choreography are terribly scripted, particularly in the world we are trending through today.

  3. Do you remember a life or anything before you were born? I don't. So that's what happens. You return to nothingness. You cease to exist. There's no coming back. How would someone know otherwise?

  4. Do not stand
    By my grave, and weep.
    I am not there,
    I do not sleep—
I am the thousand winds that blow
I am the diamond glints in snow
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle, autumn rain.
As you awake with morning’s hush,
I am the swift, up-flinging rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight,
I am the day transcending night.
    Do not stand
    By my grave, and cry—
    I am not there,
    I did not die.
    Clare Harner poem

  6. So basically you die and become part of a sea infinite nothing. The special bundle of experiences as localized concessness expands to blah.
    Being localized sounds better.
    Not looking forward to death.

  7. It is very curious to see how the duality of language lead us to mis-understand reality. That is the “Dark Force” of Maya. Thanks God that we have some very special beings as Rupert whose mission is to show us the true hidden behind the appearance of matter time and space.

  8. After death possibilities do not collapse into actual events anymore so what happens is that everything goes into what we call “unconscious” at the level of possibility. Yes consciousness is there and possibility is there but there is no ongoing conversion of the possibilities into actual events.

  11. bonjour for me the best time of day is when i go to bed i fall asleep thinking about something nice then nothing peace until the next morning………….. when i wake up and there again the problems start ………paying the bills……..the problems of everyday life…..and so on…………. i just want to say that if death is like a good nights sleep for me it's fine……….. so in a way there is nothing to worry about………. if you believe in paradise with god very good …………if there is none of that just eternal sleep it is very good too………….. so in conclusion there is nothing to worry about. in both cases for me it is perfect and to be honest i'm 67 and i'm really getting tired of living in this crazy world……… I love you all have a good life on planet earth maybe I see you in heaven. 😇 😂 🕉

  12. Why dont all masters then say: dont do anything, when u die you will be enlightened instantly. Why effort and meditations and teachings when they could just say enjoy the life and when u die you will be back to consciousness. But nope. We need effort obviously, so there is more to us then just physical body and perfect consciousness

  13. What many believe to be reality in believing that the physical is reality, is nothing more than "Story-Books" ( Program Books ) being told in the form of a "Holographic Simulation" or "Virtual Reality" in a very, very small Display Register of "The Processing System of LIFE", a Conceptual Processor far more advanced than Virtual Processors… There are Environmental Books and Avatar Books… It is Correct that "LIFE The Real Self" or AWARENESS, is NOT in the Avatar but remains outside the Display Register in what ancient manuscripts referred to as "The Place of LIFE"….

  14. The problem is that we couldn't give a certai vitality to what will happen after death I have once experienced the OBE 10 years ago but I couldn't express what happened cause it's beyond the language it's just reality
