This decades old picture remains intensely creepy but the reality was much worse than even the grim image suggests.

“A boiler explosion is a catastrophic failure of a boiler. There are two types of boiler explosions. One type is a failure of the pressure parts of the steam and water sides. There can be many different causes, such as failure of the safety valve, corrosion of critical parts of the boiler, or low water level. Corrosion along the edges of lap joints was a common cause of early boiler explosions.
The second kind is a fuel/air explosion in the furnace, which would more properly be termed a firebox explosion. Firebox explosions in solid-fuel-fired boilers are rare, but firebox explosions in gas or oil-fired boilers are still a potential hazard.”

  1. Your diagram is terribly wrong regarding superheater part. I see a lot of comments from "engineers" stating how good and clean it is. Did you just bought those comment? Either that or I feel bad about those "engineers" and the education system

  2. If the crew of the steam engine ignored the pressure gauge and not putting sufficient water in the boiler. The temperature of the boiler will increase bejond 300 – 400°C when steel looses its strength (not red glowing or melting). A pressure bejond the safety limit and a weakened boiler structural material it will burst.

  3. As a nuclear engineering student, I am quite familiar with the terror that is steam. Knowing what steam can do to nuclear reactors on a bad day, I imagine that a locomotive is not any better of a place to be when one occurs.

  4. You also forgot to mention that Super heated steam has enough heat energy to ignite and burn wood and clothing unlike your normal steam vapor. Knowing that imagine the superheated steam instantly rushed out and come into contact on your skin and clothing, it’s pretty much like standing in fire on its own and will melt and burn everything besides the damage from explosion.

  5. I'm anything about trains, really but I'm a master plumber/gas fitter and that photo doesn't make sense to me. Granted I'm trained in modern plumbing but increase in volume equals decrease in pressure as a scientific principle. Why wouldn't trains use 'trunk' lines with branches to fuel the pistons so you can control your volume decrease/pressure increase? Can someone explain how anyone is able to work in any room w/ that many hot pipes running through it? I appreciate you're story telling, qxir, but I genuinely want to know how its possible and why they did it that way

  6. Steam engines are terrifying when you think about how it’s basically a heated pressurized bomb if something malfunctions or someone makes a very human mistake. I’ve seen some of these little hobby steam engines for sale on the internet, and it just feels like a very bad idea for anyone not familiar with the dangers. Even a very small steam engine can cause massive damage/death if it explodes.

  7. My dad held the title of "Chief Enginer" at a paper mill in the mid 50's. The mill went through a few years of modernising with a new paper machine being built. A new boiler was also built to replace 7 older 225 lb stoker fed boilers of the early 1900's. The new boiler was of a German design that burnt pulverised coal that was blown into the fire box. The boiler held a presure of 900 lbs psi. as well running two new steam turbines to generate 75 % of electric used to run 5 other paper machines and auxillary equipment. The new boiler shortly after it's trial stage in May of 1956, had an explosian in the boiler, it buckeled the several cat walks and ladders around the exteriour of the boiler. My dad was not fired as he was not present at the time, but there were several other people that were. Seams the new boiler had lost it's fire, and instead of waiting the a determined cool down time it was instead relighted hot and an explosian resulted. It could have been much worse with loss of lives and much new equipment. After several weeks of inspection along with repairs, the boiler was finally brought up to being operational and run the paper mill all the way untill the mill was shut down in the year 2000. Sadly, the boiler, turbine's, paper machines were all scraped, with the mill finally being torn down in 2006. What a sad waste of machinery and jobs.

  8. You can actually see this happen for yourself in a train simulation called derail valley, there is steam loclomotives and if you deprive them of water and run them at high temperatures this will happen. It's a scary sight to see in game and is unnerving to see.

When operated correctly, steam engines are really safe, many times safer than cars, but operating them correctly requires significantly more knowledge than driving a car, heck may be on par with flying a plane in terms of complexity. As mentioned in the video though, these incidents are very scarce and for about everything except low water level and wrongly switched switches, there are failsafes like the two valves that ensure the pressure in the boiler never exceeds its safe range
