Totally And Radically Driving In Space is the canon version, you heard it here first folks. Susan just wanted it to sound more serious, but we all know the truth!
Crazy how we went all the way from the second doctor era in 1969 to almost the end of the fourth doctors era in 1979 and the name of the TARDIS wasn’t spelled out ONCE! A entire decade. A generation of kids in the colour era didn’t know the acronym. I know the Pertwee & Baker years weren’t overly focused on the shows past, but it’s still kinda crazy that the full name of the ship didn’t crop up!
(I also wanted to say the same for the Smith/calapdi era, because without doctors wife it would be mostly absent. But then 12 gave an entire lecture about it and drilled it into the audiences minds in the pilot, so Moffat was definitely making up for lost time with that one!)
For as loose as the TV movie played it with the continuity, it’s good that the name of the TARDIS is something it essentially officially re-established.
I always thought it was Dimensions. If you're talking about relative things then surely the plural version makes more sense. Now…is it gravity or mavity?
It's so interesting how they go back and forth on whether the acronym refers to what the TARDIS can do or what the TARDIS actually is. It can travel through Time and Relative Dimensions in Space, or it can manipulate Time and Relative Dimension In Space (indicated by its interior)
i think the difference is in how people interperet the acronym,, its either that the TARDIS is itself a “relative dimension” or that its for exploring “relative dimensions”. i personally like the singular better as it describes the TARDIS itself, and implies that the tardis interior is its own pocket dimension of some kind.
I agree with Bill, this acronym only works in English which makes things strange, because if Doctor landed in other place on Earth it would be not so good acronym.
Okay so thanks to translation to my language I can add another one, I don't remember since I watch in English for a long time now but something along the lines of Total absolute radical information system, don't ask
Dimension in space certainly made a comeback!

… I've barely seen any Classic Who, yet this whole time I thought it's Dimensions. But it seems they never once say it in New Who
Time and Relative Demetia In… Oh what was it agani?
I always thought it was Dimensions, i never realised NuWho exclusive used dimension
Since the TARDIS' acronym describes what the ship travels through, rather than describe the ship itself, I think 'dimensions' makes more sense.

I always thought it stood for ‘Time ‘Arry Really Didn’t Itch for a Shit’.

In Finnsh its something ridiculous like "air container" or something because they wanted to keep the initials. – If they didn't it'd be AJSUA.
time and relative dimension in sonic
What does TARDIS stand for? Because it would be a lot harder to enter if it was lying on its side!
seems like old who preferred the plural and new who prefers the singular

I never realised that aside from Unearthly Child and Davison one time that Dimensions was the de-facto for classic.
That asshole really did it sigh
It's dimension. The TARDIS itself is a dimension. It can travel through dimensions. Simple.
