  1. what are the rules of callsigns, exactly. gonky goes from sock to gonky, but under whose authority is the call sign enforced? couldn't gonky have continued to call himself sock on the radio even if the ready room calls him gonky? part ii–discussion of the mig 31 sounded oddly reminiscent of the usaf/usn problems in Vietnam. lots of really fast straight line interceptors forced to 20k alt and turning fights against mig 17, 19, & 21. part iii-grumman did "modernize" the -14. updated maint. panels to snaps instead of screws/bolts, planned to better avionics, and so on. usn was not impressed. besides, Grumman and the "bombcat"? sounds like they were after a little of that mudhen multi-role money from the get go.

  2. It is hard to fathom that a jet as advanced as this doesn’t have an autoland function when the pilot punches out. Even civilian airplanes are now being provided this capability.

  3. Lots of things are faster than the human eye. About the fastest that the eye can process an image and get it to the brain is 13 milliseconds or so. This is equivalent to about 75 frames per second, so it certainly is possible to update an image faster than the eye can process the image.

  4. Need an immediate retrofit to all F-35's of a helium filled balloon attached to a dental floss container. If another jet ends up in a swamp or lake the balloon would pop up to the surface and mark the location. This is of course assuming that the water is no deeper than 48.1 yards.

  5. As a retired engineer, I have an opinion as to why we seemingly can’t design new things. I don’t think it is any one smoking gun, but a combination of a few things. The one I struggled with the most as a hiring manager was the diversity quotas. We often could not hire the best engineers as we had to hire the best X engineer, where X was the favored class du jour. Regulation is another issue. We are probably the most regulated country in the world now, except for maybe a few countries in Europe who also can’t design anything new. Just look at all of the issues SpaceX has with the government alphabet groups. SpaceX still moves pretty fast, but they are running 50% slower than they could if not hamstrung by regulation. Lastly, the pressure from the stock market for short term financials really makes it hard to do truly new and exciting things without a healthy dose of funding from someone like Elon Musk that could self-fund initially. Even Tesla’s rate of innovation is far less than it was initially now that they have to make money and answer to thousands of investors.

Not sure how we fix this, but we have to get back to focusing on grand challenges.

  6. To add-on to what Gonky said … he learned more from being the adversary. Right. Try to MAKE a math test. Try to make a crossword puzzle. Creating tests of any type requires EXPERTISE. Performing the test is for beginners … Try it.

  7. As far a I know the Ural A320 was on route from Sochi to Omsg when on final the green hydraulic system failed. They emergency lowered gear did a touch and go because they decided to fly to Nowosibirsc because of a longer runway. They had gear up, bay doors open indicated and therefore enough fuel. Aparently the gear was wasn't up and they run out of fuel.
