I'm reminded of two historical occurrences of strikes, not sure about the details anymore, IIRC, in New York (or Dublin?) in the '60s trash/garbage collectors went on strike. Within the week the city declared a state of emergency and within 3 the collectors won. A couple of years later bankers (I think this was in Dublin) went on strike, doom was predicted, but never arrived. The people managed to self-organize a barter system with checks being passed around, after six months or so the bankers returned.
