  9. Hi Darren. This is a bit long but I thought you'd like to hear.
    This is a story told to me by my maternal grandmother when I was young. I was very close to her and spent most weekends with her.
    She lived in a small village in SW England. There's a beautiful 12th C church and graveyard and she now rests there with my granddad.
    Well, a chap called Charlie used to wind the church clock about once a week. He'd done it for several years and, at the time this happened, was in his 60's. This was the late 60's early 70's when this happened.
    This one morning, he unlocked the church to go wind the clock. He had his dog, a little Jack Russel, with him as usual.
    He opened the wooden door to the steps up the tower and, as usual, his dog rushed ahead up the stone steps. As Charlie started climbing the steps, his dog yelped and raced back down. His hackles were up and he looked scared by something. Charlie said the area ahead felt colder than usual but didn't see anything, nobody there. Charlie did that job until his death. His dog would go into the church and just sit by the tower entrance, refusing to go further.
    Charlie was a lovely bloke. An honest, salt of the earth type, totally straight forward and would do anything to help you out so there's no reason he'd make up a story.
